Hard to identify an onion too.

    Van Gogh Smoked a Peterson?

"Still Life With Plate of Onions," 1889, has the same pipe. Peterson started to make the system pipe around 1865, though it was not patented until later. A man from Eastern Europe moved to Dublin, changed his name to Peterson, and showed a local pipe shop his way of making pipes. I think they...

    Do You Stroke Your Pipe?

    No. The pipe strokes me.

Something I Learned Recently: The Cherrywood

I had a large cherrywood pipe in the 50s. It was made of 2 pieces; one for the bowl, another for the shank. There was a regular mouthpiece. The advantage of the pipe was the size, the low price and the fact that you could put it on it's bottom without it falling over. The smoke, though I stuck...

Music: Can You Sing, Play An Instrument Etc.? Show Us!

I am not a real musician, but have played some strange instruments. The best was cardboard mailing tubes. I punch a hole in the metal end and use a trumpet mouthpiece. You can get all the bugle notes. An eight footer is the bass, a small one the soprano.

I used a Bic, but you can light a Zippo on a moving motorcycle.

Could intense/hot smoking lead to burnout?

Yes. In the 1950s I bought a new Charatan from Lane Ltd. I was a high school student who supported his pipe habit with great difficulty. They had a no burnout guarantee. I hated the pipe which smoked lousy. I puffed wildly numerous times until the pipe, a big thick one, burned out. They replaced it.

    Basket pipe advice

It will most likely be a dud. Watch out for putty fillings and try to get as tight a grain as possible.

    Mac Baren HH Vintage Syrian

A great tobacco with a little age and some "breathing," like wine. I saved a few dozen tins even though I had to quit.

I love the strong cedar flavor in many cigars...can you find it in pipe tobacco?

You might get it by aging tobacco long term in a cedar lined humidor. Be aware that cigars will kill you much faster than a pipe.

How Many of You Lucky Dogs Get to Smoke Inside?

I did for years. Finally had to quit. My wife did not like it. She moved out and visits occasionally.

    Preferred Pipe Weight for Clenching

Never weighed them but the easiest to clench are small #1, #2 or #3 (Dunhill sizes) bent pipes such as a bent billiard or Zulu.

    Al Pascia Reverse Calabashes

They smoke very well. I have one Ascorti and one Radice. Unfortunately I just cannot smoke any more. So if someone wants a used one, let me know.

    Van Gogh Smoked a Peterson?

In Self Portrait with Glass, 1887, he is smoking a pipe. It appears to be an army mount Peterson.

Clay Pipe - A first (asking for advice)

When I started smoking in the 1950s these cost 25 cents each. They smoke very well when fully broken in, poorly before that. The problem is that they are usually broken before they get broken in. Yes they smoke hot; just don't hold the pipe by the bowl.

    first impression of p-lip.

It directs the smoke to the roof of your mouth instead of your tongue. Both can be irritable if you smoke a lot, so it is best to smoke some of each.
