    Have We Reached 'Peak Pipe'?

If we use the analogy of 'peak oil', it would be the number of pipes being produced, rather than innovations in smoking technology. In that sense, we are obviously well past the peak, and will continue to decline. In terms of style, there is still room for innovation, but the potential choices...

Do You Ever Add a Pinch of Something to a Blend?

Adding a pinch of a heavily topped Virginia (like Dan's Sweet Vanilla Honeydew) to a straight Burley can be very nice.

    Twist Help!

Also, these tobaccos need a lot of air for combustion, so pack somewhat loose, and make sure the pipe you use has a wide open draw.

    Twist Help!

In a dry climate, they need 2-3 hours of drying time. I cube cut it, rub it out, and then lay it out on a paper towel for 2-3 hours. I have found that these twists will not stay lit in a narrow conical bowl. When I switched from a Dublin to a Pot it was transformative.

    Thread Titles

I'm kind of new to this forum. I notice that we have some thread titles that clearly define the topic to be discussed (specific). We also have some thread titles that look intriguing yet give no real information as to the nature of what is to be discussed (nonspecific). I'm also on other...

Narrow Draft on New Pipe. Advice?

Some people prefer a narrower airway. Pros and cons. It can work very well if the chamber is loosely packed. Works better with a flat-bottomed chamber. A pipe with wider airway needs to be packed more tightly, in order to avoid a tasteless smoking experience.

The Breath Method as Described by Muttonchop Piper

Inhaling smoke into the lungs is a valid concern, but in practice it does not occur. Shallow breathing is key to making this work, just the same as the other ways of pipe smoking. I've noticed that the correct way corresponds to 'abdominal breathing', also called diaphragmatic breathing.

You Can Literally Use the Word Literally, Literally Anyway You Want?

I'd say the word is being abused, and has been for a long time. Another one that was misused a lot is the word "actually". It reminds me of when people begin a sentence: "To be perfectly frank and honest..."

The Breath Method as Described by Muttonchop Piper

One great thing about the breath method is that it incorporates a gentle retrohale with every exhalation. One disadvantage I find is that the constant inhalation and exhalation through the pipe tends to heat up the bowl, moreso than just inhaling through the pipe. But this can be overcome by...

    SG Available on P&C

I received some crushed tins of St James Flake yesterday. I won't mention the retailer. I blame the shipper- Its bloody disrespectful of the U.S. customer. The tins have a slight tobacco scent, but I find that to be the case with most SG tins, so I think the seals survived.

How to Prepare Rope and Twist Pipe Tobacco

Great info, thanks. I've been using an Alaskan Ulu knife and curved wooden cutting bowl-board, with good results. I make a cube cut, and then let it dry out for several hours before packing. I've been gravity filling a medium-small conical bowl, but I'm struggling with multiple relights. I need...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

That Ashton is very classic Dunhill-esque, moreso than a lot of other B.T. Ashtons. What would an identical Dunhill from that year be worth?

    C'Mon Smokingpipes.com!!!! Get With It

I might need to move to your part of the country.. I also think there's a move away from the time-honored blends to more 'boutique' blends. These are produced in smaller quantities, and more prone to shortage. Once a brand is known to be in short supply, people want it all the more.

I have yet to see a pipe smoker outdoors (in modern times). Another reason for increased cellaring: Fear of tobacco legislation.

    C'Mon Smokingpipes.com!!!! Get With It

Great thread. SP tobacco sales are up, but why? I suspect its more related to cellaring than an increase in the number of pipe smokers. Why, you might ask, would cellaring increase? Internet access and social media.

Yes indeed, the buyer sets the price. Or is it the seller?

    If Only I Had A Spare $2.5K...

Makes sense to me. The rules become more 'abstract' the higher up you go. Like the stock market.
