Erinmore Flake, Murray vs Orlik Version

I tried the Erinmore flake and I like quite a lot. I know the current version (Orlik) is different from the original Murray one. Most of the talk is about the difference in casing which looks like was much stronger in the original one. But what about the tobacco, is it also different the new...

    Aromatic Recommendations Please

You should at least try some of the Lakelands from the SG/GH. I warn you it is a love or hate relation but you should at least try. The quality of the tobacco is top notch and the casing is intended to complement the tobacco not to override it. The probably quintessence of Lakeland is...

Samuel Gawith Grousemoor, Cannon and RB plugs

I am in discovery phase of plugs and aromatics so I got in addition to the FVP and St James plugs (which are delicious) also the Grousemoor plug. Honestly I did not have too high expectations about the Grousemoor and the main reason I got it is because it is one of the oldest if not the oldest...

    Suggestions for 1792 Flake Mix

I tried 1792 flake. The Good, I like a lot it has a delicious taste. The Bad, it is too high in nic dept for me. So I am thinking to mix it with some other blend to tone done nic hit. Any suggestion for a blend to mix with 1792 in order to decrease nic while retaining as much as possible its...

Jarring Flake Tobacco, Rub or No

Cellar only as a full flake, no rub. First of all as I believe it ages better and second because I keep the option open to fold, rub or cube later on, if I rub to start I give away the options.

Cellaring - Original Tins or Mason Jars?

[It also depends on age. How does the percentage of failed tins change over time?] It also depends from the conditions they were stored. This is why I'd like to hear experience of tins purchased new and cellared from the same person. I think experience with tins purchased in the third market...

Cellaring - Original Tins or Mason Jars?

[So if you take out the Kingfisher tins, it’s only been 1 tin out of say 100.] Thanks, this is the kind of info I was looking for and it would be interesting to see if it reflects the experience of other people who are keeping tobacco in tins rather than jarring. If 1% is the approximate...

Cellaring - Original Tins or Mason Jars?

[Tins weren't designed to be a long term, as in close to a decade or more, storage solution. Some tins hold up, some do not. Pressure sealed tins leak at a very slow rate. Them's just the facts.] I understand tins can leak or can rust inside. The real question is not that it can happen (we know...

Cellaring - Original Tins or Mason Jars?

I leave in the tin but I run 1 inch aluminum tape between the lid and the tin as a peace of mind in case the seal get compromised. Once opened I reseal the tin with a double layer aluminum foil placed under the lid and sealed with electric tape and then a second seal of the lid with aluminum...

    How many bowls?

It depends obviously from the size of the pipe but also on how it is packed. One of the most important thing I learnt is that it is much better packing moderately loosely rather than tightly as it delivers more full flavor, less relights and less chance of biting. Said that I would say a...

    All About Plugs

In addition to what already mentioned I would add Sam Gawith's Groosemoore if you want to try a Lakeland one.

    Nightcap, Jar It or Not?

About your original question I would keep in the original tin. The risk (small) of leaving in the tin is the potential of losing the seal. What I do is running aluminum tape around the lid to protect from this remote risk. However, I would open and smoke every while some of the tins, first of...

    Storing Flakes

I prefer to jar as they are and dry them when smoking. I don't have a final scientific explanation but I think keeping wet as when delivered favors the aging process. But again it is just my speculation.

    Favorite Lakeland Blends?

-Ennerdale flake which is probably the quintessential of Lakeland flavor -Groosemoore (flake or better plug if you can find) which is the oldest of all the lakelands still in production (it is said it is 200 year old recipe) and a lovely for me "baked biscuit taste"

    First Smoke Clay Pipe

[I just wish there were more selections with better bits or stems selections.] Lepeltier send theirs with vulcanite stems which are pretty good.

    Slow Smoke Meaning

One thing can help with tamping is using a tamper with holes on it so when you tamp lightly with it while puffing air can still get in the bowl making easier to keep it lighted. I found it pretty useful.

    Lakelands

[Try the Ennerdale Plug if you can find it. That stuff is wonderful with a few years age. ] Where can be sourced a seller sending the Ennerdale Plug to the USA? For the SG/GH plugs/ropes unavailable in the States I use Synjeco but they don't have Ennerdale Plug.

Do Expensive Pipes Really Smoke Better?

A lot has been seen and it is always fun to look at this thread. My short answer to the original question “Do Expensive Pipes Really Smoke Better?” is that it cannot be answered as the definition of what constitutes a better smoke is different from person to person and even if we agree on some...

    Straight Orientals?

[Outside of the above mentioned Peretti blend, there isn't much, since MacClelland shut down. Their Grand Orientals line was superb.] I agree MC Grand orientals were superb and I cellared most of them. However, they have a major base of Virginia but still definitely great.
