When Less is More... a.k.a. Minimalism in the PipeWorld

I'd characterize standard shapes as elegant rather than minimalistic. They reflect the aesthetic of their time. If for example one looks at a classic billiard done right, the angles and proportions are highly exacting throughout. Another example of an elegant but by no means minimalistic...

    Evening Pipes and Sleep

Judging from this thread, there is a lot of individual variation. Last night I had a small bowl of dark bird's eye an hour before bed, and I slept well. I think there is a dose relationship for me, with insomnia brought about by even a mild nicotine overload.

    Evening Pipes and Sleep

Maybe if I smoke my evening bowl with a shot of whiskey? I doubt that would help much.

    Evening Pipes and Sleep

I've read about it having both stimulant and depressant effects, which could vary with the individual or the dose.

    Evening Pipes and Sleep

Last night I was up for hours, slept poorly, and had nightmares. I had enjoyed a large bowl of Royal Yacht after dinner, after having laid off the pipe for a couple of days. I should have smoked something less potent, but that's what I craved. I had slept quite well the previous few nights...

What Advice Would you Give a Young Man?

I wish I had asked this question at 30, but I wasn't smart enough to do so. -Being careful who you marry is a great one, but easier said than done. Maybe there are some good books on this subject. -Don't waste time chasing things that are designed to boost your prestige or ego. Social media is...

People Who Can't Control their Dogs...

Oh man, don't get us started. And don't say hello to a stranger, unless you want his or her dog to growl at you. When I go out on the walking paths that surround my house, I always make sure that I can defend myself.

    Storing Tins

Now you tell me. Well, tins in general in this day and age are sealed, so I assumed.

    Storing Tins

Those Solani Silvers are an accident waiting to happen. They should have a warning label on the lid: Caution, Drying Out Now! I also wonder about the Capstan tins, as well as the Mac Baran HH tins...

    Storing Tins

I've sealed all of my Gawith tins in mylar bags, based on the advice I've gleaned from this forum. Are there any other brands that tend to dry out over the years?

    School me on Birdseye

That sounds mostly right. But I think the bird's eyes are the one and the same with the straight grain, rather than having anything to do with stones and rocks. I've always assumed the straight grain corresponds to water transport. So far I haven't found much about it on the internet.

    School me on Birdseye

What is the function of bird's eye (or straight grain for that matter)? The Wikipedia entry says the cause is unknown, and offers no theory as to its function.

    Carolina Red Flake vs. Edisto

Excluding the Carolina Red with perique, they are quite comparable. The Carolina Red has a higher sugar content and smokes brighter (at least the ones I've tried). I believe the Edisto will benefit from a few years of aging to blend its flavors better- but time will tell. The Carolina Red is...

Mornings: Do You Prepare For Battle?

I have a stressful work situation. Meditation just after waking up helps. I sit and note the knot in my stomach without judging it or trying to change it. Eventually it dissipates.

Question for the Various Samuel Gawith Flakes

Not too wide, not to narrow, not too large, not too small. Straight walls, or slightly conical. Something like a Dunhill 3 or 4 billiard would be close to optimal.

Question for the Various Samuel Gawith Flakes

Very often I mistakenly smoke a Lakeland in one of my straight Virginia pipes, but I have yet to have any issue with ghosting. Latakia might be another story.

    If Money Were No Obstacle....

Jess. His pipes are all beautiful, and supremely smokeable.

So I guess it was worth responding to.

    Dunbar Takes A Dump

I'm not sure about Esoterica, but I think it's been years since the last significant Germains drop in the U.S. I was thinking that I would like to try it someday, so it's good to know I'm not missing much.
