I've created a new pipe smoker

I was out enjoying a pipe while some of my shipmates were smoking cigars the other night, and it garnered more than the usual passing interest by one of them. I let him have a couple draws from the pipe (Samuel Gawith Navy Flake in this case), and he instantly loved it. After some talking, he...

Well, at Least the FDA Approved This.

As some cases of weight gain have been linked to stress hormone cortisol [citation needed] and pipe smoking is a great way to reduce stress, this suggestion might be an advisable weight loss aid. I'm going to coin a term for what I just did with my [citation needed] brackets as wikipediaing myself.

    A little fellow follows me

In the spirit of the grand day many of us will celebrate Sunday as fathers, sons and daughters, I want to share a poem I came across today. It came to my inbox via The Art of Manliness blog, cited as an anonymous poem, and after some digging I discovered it was a poem much loved by late great...

Color In Pipes, Blue and Green in Particular

I kind of like the pipe you linked, and would welcome it into my collection if someone gave it to me. I was already contemplating my feelings on a line of pipes with odd color combination (although a bit more traditional than the Genod). The new Peterson Carlingford collection is black with...

    I did bad... Now what?

I'm a cursing Sailor and I struggled to figure out what Jackswilling was covering up with those asterisks. Given my nautical background the second one read as "jury-rigged" as in a temporary, or jury-rigged, mast (etymology possibly being old French "ajurie" for help/relief or corruption of...

Flake Tobacco: Rub Out Or Fold & Stuff

I got flake specifically so I had something to smoke on especially windy days, and I've only ever tried the fold and stuff method. But then it might be relaxing to rub one out every now and then... deathmetal was just talking about flake tobacco, right? No?

What do you know about GOC?

I just ordered a trio of pipes from piperestorer.com that includes a "GOC Plexi St. Claude." I tried to find information about GOC, but little is out there beyond its current obsolescence. I am just curious about its background and possibly rough age. As it is being shipped to a deployed ship I...

    Corn Cob Pipes

I was about to get on here and complain that I am not a fan of my cob, because the last time I smoked it toward the end of the bowl I sucked up multiple embers, not a pleasant experience. I thought it was a non-filtered pipe I had gotten way long ago, but looking at it now, it has a striking...

Tea Drinkers - What Online Stores Do You Use?

I'm am a huge fan of tea, and have found a few great places online. My usual criteria are a good selection of unflavored black teas and a decent selection of organic options. The below list is in order of my level of experience with them, not in order of most to least favorite, as they all have...

What do you think of new Comoy's/what pipe should I buy

michiganlover I nearly missed your post. Checked out the Comoy's on piperestorer.com, and then started looking at some of the restored pipes on there. I had the Comoy's 80 and two other pipes in my cart ready to check out when I discovered the address form on there doesn't have the FPO "states"...

    The ash on top

My recent habit has been to keep the ash on top. I will continually gently tamp down as I go, compressing the ash even. I smoke outside on a ship, which means it's almost always windy, so the ash protects my thumb when I cover the bowl to keep the wind away.

What do you think of new Comoy's/what pipe should I buy

The Stanwell 32 has a great price point. That complicates my decision making even more than Ahmad Othman did with is suggestion to check out the Peterson line-up. With the Petersons, I like the Kinsale (smooth XL13, based off the Baker Street design) even better than the Sherlock Holmes Baker...

What do you think of new Comoy's/what pipe should I buy

I don't need a new pipe...the three I have are doing fine in rotation considering I only get one opportunity a day to smoke. But... I recently saw a pipe I am rather quickly becoming infatuated with, a Comoy's Traditional 80 (bulldog). Most of what I have seen on here regarding Comoy's regards...

    Tobacco in ziploc bags

I have been fortunate that my tobaccos in plastic bags have not dried out. The concern about toxins leaking into my tobacco from the bags is a concern of mine, and I see it was mentioned only briefly, but not a concern that will make me toss my couple year old tobacco that still smokes great. If...

    Stanwell Bulldog 32

I was eyeing the Stanwell Royal Danish 405 (Dublin) last time I was on P&C. Now I'm torn between that and the bulldog. The bowl is ever so slightly deeper on the Dublin, so I might have to stick with that on my next order.

    Tobacco in ziploc bags

Part of why I ask, I have a couple of blends I got a few years ago, kept in the plastic bag (more out of neglect than a conscious decision on my part). Those tobaccos are as moist as the day I got them and at least apparently to me have lost none of their aromatic appeal. There was no detriment...

    Persecuted in San Jose

The devil's advocate view: While I don't like the idea of not having somewhere to smoke, it sounds more like a property owner enforcing what type of activity is happening on private property. I'd be upset if my right to regulate activity on my private property were infringed on...

    Military discount

Thanks tuold, I didn't realize Exchange online sells pipes. The deals look reasonably good, but not much better than the sale prices you'll find at other online pipe stores. As far as tobacco, in my limited experience looking at an Exchange, I have seen a limited selection of mostly cheap...

    Tobacco in ziploc bags

I did a cursory search for the answer and couldn't find anything definitive regarding the subject: what is bad about storing pipe tobacco in a ziploc bag if that's how it came? I see in plenty of places that the widely accepted method of storing pipe tobacco is in a sealed glass jar, naming the...

    Getting in shape

I'd say cutting meat isn't always the best way to cut weight. Moderating it will help, but even more important is cutting simple sugars from your diet. Cut out soda, candy, pastries, minimize pastas and alcoholic beverages, sub in some good veggies, and incorporate moderate exercise (like OP's...
