    More Meerschaum 'Cutty' Pipes

You have a great Friend and a couple of new great pipes.

Aromatics in your rotation? With a dedicated pipe?

If you read only on this Forum, or others similar to it, you might think very few 'experienced/sophisticated" smokers actually smoke aromatics. In the general pipe-smoking universe, however, aromatics are more widely embraced. Lane's 1-Q is very popular. Similar and perhaps more widely...

    Royal Yacht

I am surprised to see how many more positive comments on RY are posted here than seem to be on TR. Either far more sophisticated tasters here or possibly more masochists. I am not a straight VA guy anyway, but even if I were it seems unlikely I'd spend the $10 or so for a tin... just me, of...

Is Royal Yacht a True Aromatic?.....Should I Worry?

For a newbie, you appear to have formed some pretty firm opinions about those "horrible" aromatics, of which I am sure there are plenty. Once outside the rarified environment of places like Pipes Magazine, i.e., the rest of the pipe-smoking world, sales of aromatic tobacco seem to indicate LOTS...

Any Difference in Dunhill Bulk vs Tins?

It may or may not be significant, but from time to time I have seen various, isolated comments specifically mentioning the posters DID notice a difference between Dunhill tins and bulk. Theoretically I suppose the prep for tinning a specific blend could differ from bulk processing. I will soon...

Virginia Blends with a Pinch of Latakia

@pitchfork, thanks for the recommendation. #10 made it to the top of my wish list!

Virginia Blends with a Pinch of Latakia

Another question...any take on PW&W's #10? From it's description and Tob Review's evaluations it appears to be a blend in which latakia is not dominant. I smoke Carole's #524 and like it a lot, despite my general lack of affection for Cavendish in non-aromatic blends.

Virginia Blends with a Pinch of Latakia

Holy Smokes... what a wealth of ideas to pursue! Need to prioritize. EMP is a good place to start as I have smoked it, pre-Orlik, and remember liking it a lot! And obviously the GLP blends need exploring as well! Thanks to all for giving me my 2015 tobacco project a great head start! JR

Virginia Blends with a Pinch of Latakia

@Cosmic: curious as to which Oriental/Balkan blends with "a hint" of latakia you refer. I'd like to try a tobacco where the Orientals carry the ball, with the latakia used more as a condiment than an overbearing lead component. Many thanks! P.S. I'm not really into Perique, Kentucky or...

    Aromatic Advice for Non-Aro Smoker

Unless I missed it, the OP didn't mention if he had a aro taste/smell preference and/or what he dislikes... Maple, rum, vanilla....? It would be easier to make a recommendation if we knew that, No? Just a thought. And while Pipe Works & Wilke is noted for some very fine aromatics, when...

    Pipe Smokers of New York

Though now living on Cape Cod, the few times I commuted from NW New Jersey to the NYPC dinner meets, it was well worth it. At the time, they were meeting at Florio's in Little Italy and between the food and fellowship, the 4+ hr commute was well worth it. The "smoking room" at Florio's was...

    Smokers Terrorists?

CigarMaster, I sure do hope that the prevalent attitude of LE in your town, as stated in your post, doesn't somehow come to the attention of the City Fathers. Hope no one 'drops a dime' on our sympathetic bretheren in blue! jr/john

Pipe Smoker Survey 2012 - SUMMARY REPORT

@Adam12...your comments are interesting and thoughful reflections on this pastime of ours. Maybe raw stats and surveys inadequately illuminate and discern subtle nuances among the pipe-smoking community. Like trying to sew a button on a lemon meringue pie? jr/john

Pipe Smoker Survey 2012 - SUMMARY REPORT

Mine was only one theory, based on personal perceptions. On the other hand, I've attended one or two NJ pipe club shindigs and several dinner meetings of the NY Pipe Club and there was no lack of spirited collegial verbal intercourse, that's true. When I go to JR Cigars to meet with a cigar...

    Mini Meerschaum pipes

More knowledgeable experts can correct me, but I don't think you need spend the whole $200 to buy a reasonably sized well made, block meerschaum pipe from a reputable carver. It won't be a Baki for $200 but still one from a high-quality carver. Fred, Brian and Storient can fill in the blanks...

Pipe Smoker Survey 2012 - SUMMARY REPORT

I'll throw this out. Are we less "social" than say, cigar smokers, because the rhythm of pipe smoking doesn't facilitate conversation and social interaction?? I find the pipe requires a lot of fidgeting and fine-tuning. I'm forever filling, tamping, relighting and messin' with the thing (which...
