Yep. It's not an everyday smoke for me, but usually, about every three days, I'll load up a bowl and really push it, just for the kick. Great shit. 8)

I am surprised to see how many more positive comments on RY are posted here than seem to be on TR.

Either far more sophisticated tasters here or possibly more masochists.

I am not a straight VA guy anyway, but even if I were it seems unlikely I'd spend the $10 or so for

a tin... just me, of course

Not quite sure why people are so vocal about their dislike of this blend. I always have a tin in the rotation.

Why not be vocal about one's likes or dislikes? This is the place for opinions right? :)

Your contents were lucky...mine were mixed into the mulch outside my apartment.

Well, if anyone has a tin of Royal Yacht knocking around, that they would like to be rid of, I have a crapload of 1-Q to trade for it. I think 1-Q tastes like warmed-over weasel piss, but I'm quite fond of the Yacht.
Exactly my sentiments.
RY has some kind of citrus-like topping, and emits a plum/fig scent when that stuff dries off. I suggest unsealing a tin and letting it sit for a week. It naturally dries and the weird topping evaporates. This topping is more like fruit juice and vodka than the thick goopy sugar stuff they put on the big name aros. It's less present than say the chocolate/vanilla/mint(?) in PA.

Wow... I've never read a thread that was so all over the place. I can't decide whether to try it or swear it off.

Nate...Try it! ROyal Yacht has a great chocolate-stout sweetness mid way through the bowl. I do not consider it an Aromatic.

Royal Yacht is the only tinned blend (non-OTC) I've tried that I vociferously dislike.

I first tried Royal Yacht about 20 years ago and thought it was nasty, the impression I got was of smoking tea leaves. Then for some reason unbeknownst to me I tried RY again, about 10 years ago and I loved the stuff. I now keep a tin in regular rotation and have plenty of tins aging away. I have never had another blend that did such a 180 on me, I have had blends grow on me and many blends that I have lost a taste for, but only Royal Yacht has gone from nasty to delicious!

I love the stuff, though I do prefer the Murray's version to the current Orlick version. The Murray;s version has more octane and fis airly different from the current version.

Royal Yacht is pretty good, nothing to write home about but a solid, mild aromatic with some strength. It's not the kind of aromatic that most know and love but more in the neighborhood of a Sammy Gawith aromatic, but the Gawith stuff has a stronger kick. I like it better than 965. I'd say it is on par with Elizabethen Mixture and Three Year Matured in my book.

I've been calling these semi-aromatics to distinguish them from the "goopier" form.
Royal Yacht has some kind of top flavoring, but it is relatively mild and not heavy in humectant or sugar. It smells like some kind of citrus combined with some kind of alcohol.
I tend to pop open a tin of RY, then screw the lid back on, then leave it lying around in a cupboard for about a week. This evaporates most of the bitter top flavor and leaves a fruity, plum or fig essence.

RY (and nightcap) are the two blends that I consistently smoke down to ash. They are just very well made, and in sufficient quantity that they can be very consistant (I think).
If these were the last two blends on earth I would remain a pipe smoker. Maybe not my top five but they are on my list for buy often but lots.
Also, for a one bowl a day guy, they have sufficient kick to let you know your being bad.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but these are two of the blends I esteem the highest. They do everything right, and also have found a specific taste niche. Maybe one of those eternal flavors, like beef stroganov or Italian pasta sauce.
