    Vinegar Note

I was reading the recipes for old British tobaccos, like St. Bruno, that are available in the tobacco archives. The recipes are all coded, with the ingredients having code names. But there is a master document with all the codes written in. Long story short, vinegar (glacial acetic acid) is...

    Bad News From The UK!

A propos the Vegas Residency comment, I think they'd seen the billions Taylor Swift is taking in. Add to that a recent divorce settlement to the tune of $25 million (?) out of Noel Gallagher's pocket? I think he'll put up with his neanderthal brother for as long as he can. Sales of ticket...

    Dating Charatan?

Charatan had a strange affinity for sharp curves in the stems rather than very gradual, smooth curvature. The shape 11 has a similar thing going on. I find it a bit odd looking, or perhaps the obsessive-compulsive in me does.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Absolutely. My Merchants all have those rims, with the exception of one briar that is shorter and a normal billiard shape.

    What Is The Difference

Pipes, cigarette holders... two blips along an entropic continuum toward an inevitably disordered Universe.

    Help with Hallmarks

When the subject was brought up a while back, I caught myself wondering how the name was pronounced. I thought briefly it might be pronounced "WHYTH-COMB" but, um, now I know it's meant to have as many syllables as "HORR-ID-BORES".

    Peregrine falcon

What do you suppose he's got his eyes on? Pigeons in the square perhaps? Saw a falcon catch a baby cottontail rabbit here in the backyard just the other day. Majestic, elegant animals.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

The pipe, by the way, came from an estate in Evanston, Illinois. This particular location is significant to the genesis of the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club and several people with whom we are familiar in the pipe world. Perhaps it is from the estate of a recently-deceased collector from...

I'm not sure. I'll have a closer look, and ask for an opinion from a guy I know who knows about such things. ;) I'm curious about what this single data point represents, since I'm unable to find many examples of other pipes from this approximate date. There was one on Worthpoint, but the photos...

It's just a detail, doesn't irk me much and wouldn't take much to fix. 🙏

Oh it's bare briar in there. No gunk.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Thank you, my friend. I sort of chuckle as it really looks no different than any of the other nearly-identical pipes I have. They all look like they came from the same warehouse. 😁 Thanks, sir! Unfortunately there was bare briar left in the mortise after the admittedly lengthy cleaning, so...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

For a long while I've been after an "old" Charatan, something predating the more "modern" pipes of the '50s and, especially '60s onward and, to my mind, they are the absolute devil to date with any accuracy. Could anyone say with any certainty "this is a 1940s Charatan"? In any case, I finally...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

I have plenty of "$20 Dunhills" that I clean up to the best of my ability and smoke around the house. The majority of them I wouldn't sell without disclosing all the flaws they have, as was the case with a recent example I posted above. The problem is that over the years getting the stems to...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

What hardship you suffer by George's opinion that you so vehemently object to it, again and again? Do you believe perhaps that by his standards you are the "poor sucker" whose treasure finds are devalued? Like you, I polish up my oxidized stems and do my best with what is within my means, but...

I have one of these--an Eire System 3. The bowl diameter is 0.95in compared to a Group 4 0.8in, but the bowl depth is a whopping 2.5in compared to 1.6in Group 4. My thumb fits inside to the second knuckle.
