    Are Stingers Good or Bad?

IMHO they are bad. They seem to condense some moisture from the smoke and promote gurgling. I removed them from the few pipes that I have had that came with them. The Kaywoodies which were non-removable just got traded on.

I Smoked my Meer in a Bad Way!

I've never watched a YouTube video about pipes. This was information I heard or read many years ago. I couldn't tell you where specifically I got this advice since it was 40 or more years ago when I got my first meerschaum.

    Unique Pipe 1/24/24

I've seen a number of them, most appear to be Bakelite, including the bowl. Yecch!

I Smoked my Meer in a Bad Way!

I recall being advised not to even take a lit meerschaum from a warm room into a cold room. Apparently, there is some truth to them being fragile when thermally stressed. I've always regarded them as a pipe for the easy chair.

Pets: Yes, They Will Eat You!

My daughter keeps pigs and cats and a livestock guardian dog who treed a bear the other day (the pigs chased the bear too) and I guess I could even get nibbled to death by her ducks, or maybe the goats. I don't smoke my pipe at her place and I guess I should be careful not to keel over...

Pets: Yes, They Will Eat You!

I'm struggling to see the relevance to pipe smoking here.

    Corona Old Boy service?

I sent my Old Boy to ARS & Elegant lighters and they did a fine job.

    Found in the Wild

Yesterday my wife and I drove to a nearby town to go to the bakery/cafe there. They have very good pastries, but mostly it was because you just can't have pastrami on anything other than rye bread, right? As we walked up to the door, there were two men sitting outside, a younger fellow with a...

    Pipe Smoking Vocabulary

I refer to it as imprecise because another term may also be used, "Sherlock Holmes was, as I expected, lounging about his sitting room in his dressing-gown, reading the agony column of The Times and smoking his before-breakfast pipe, which was composed of all the plugs and dottles left from his...

    Pipe Smoking Vocabulary

Don't get too hung up on finding an exact meaning for such terms. For instance, How 'Cadence' Became a Business Term - https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/words-were-watching-cadence As you can see the word has come to mean a regular interval and I doubt anyone is using a metronome to...

    Two Hours in a Box

I used to have to visit an office building near LAX that had a sign in the elevator that said "there is little chance of the elevator dropping or falling out of control..". Little chance? You mean there is a chance!

    It Was the "Sap"

Allow me to quote from an authority, Carl Weber from "Weber's Book of Pipes". "Briar is wood and, like all wood when freshly cut contains moisture in the form of sap." "If the sap were allowed to remain in the briar, it would melt when subjected to heat, and it would soon be forced to the...

    Cherrywood Troubleshooting

No experience, but my understanding is that cherrywoods typically have the bark left on to reduce the chance of splitting. I would stick with briar.

How Long Have You Smoked a Pipe?

Started at age 16, some 58 years ago. As a Sherlock Holmes fan it seemed a natural thing to do. Also my Dad occasionally smoked his pipes. I was very impressed finding a tin he kept old washers and screws in that said it was a custom blend for him. The idea of a "bespoke" blend seemed very elegant.

    A Question About Castellos

Of the four I have in my collection, two are Sea Rock, one is a Natural Vergin and one is an Old Antiquari. I can't afford the smooth finish pipes. All of them are superb smokers and yes, I threw away the little reeds. It's true that some of the acrylic stems tend to be a little thick but not...
