How Biased Are Pipe Tobacco Reviews

The only reliable way of finding new tobaccos that I like is to actually try some. I end up throwing some away and cellaring others in hopes that they will age well. When I get lucky, I buy more. My favorite tobaccos smoke better in some pipes than in others. The specific pipe matters a lot.

    Favorite Youtube Channel?

For pipe-related things I like "Your Good Friend Bradley" of StuffAndThings. He's a straight shooter that gives well considered opinions when he does pipe tobacco reviews. Until recently, my favorite was BlueCollarPipeSmoker because Eric made good up-beat videos on pipe history; unfortunately...

    Savinelli Tortugas?

Do the caps for Savinelli Tortugas work well at staying in place and containing partially smoked bowls to be finished later, or fresh bowls to be smoked later? Are the caps durable? Do they use too much of the chamber volume? Thanks.

Eric The Blue Collar Pipe Smoker?

I just noticed that the youtube channel for Eric The Blue Collar Pipe Smoker is gone. I hope he's OK. Maybe just busy with having a youngster to care for.

    Down With Tin Note!

Do you like the tin note of Presbyterian because you also like the smell of southern style barbecued meat cooked in a smoker? That's what it smells like to me, and I don't like that smell at all, or the smell of just about anything smoked, like smoked salmon or bacon.

    Nope To Plasma Lighter

Me too, and I also like the Bic EZ Reach lighters because they are great in the wind. In wind, I pack the bowl about 1/2 to 2/3 full and that allows me to put the tip of the lighter deep enough into the bowl so that I don't overly burn the tobacco when I light it. Better than a Zippo for that in...

    Down With Tin Note!

There's a lot to that. Aromatherapy is a big deal in some circles and I can tell you from having been to such places that pipe tobacco generally smells much better.

    Nope To Plasma Lighter

That's why it's a nope from me. People responding in this thread and who have tried it say they don't work.

    Pipe Flavor Terms?

Related to pipe tobacco flavors, I see a lot of terms that I don't understand, but would like to. For example, what does "tangy" mean? and how is it different from "spicy"? I also don't understand "sweet" because I've experienced plenty of tobacco flavored with sweet things, but I would not...

A bit of tongue burn/bite normal?

Yes, slow down some more, but also let the tobacco dry longer. First, try something extreme like putting a bowl's worth of tobacco on a plate and let it dry for a full day. Smoke that and see if you like it better. Adjust drying time as needed. A common amount of time for drying the tobacco on a...

    Down With Tin Note!

Quote: "On the other had I never load a bowl of tobacco without first checking the humidity." Yes! That is a vital consideration. It makes all the difference. And usually, if I think it's dry enough, then it still should be dried more.

    Nope To Plasma Lighter

Take a look at pictures of the plasma lighters. Do you think the heat will be close enough to the tobacco to light it? I don't think so.

    Storing Tins

Good point. If I am keeping the tobacco open for a long time I put it into mason jars. I usually keep three tins in the humidor and smoke only those until I've finished them. That takes about a year, and the humidor is fine for that. There are some new tobaccos that I try and dislike. I put...

The Good Old Days? - New Article by G.L. Pease for September 2022

That's my kind of pipe ownership! And the ownership of other good quality items. Buy quality. Quality has no regrets except the initial sticker shock. Take care of it. It lasts a long time. And it is a joy to use.

    Good book

I've read it. It seems dated, more like 1970s than today, and scarcely mentions the influence of the internet. I've paraphrased the book on this forum about the state of briar as a resource and that information was described here by other forum members as incorrect, but in strongly vulgar terms.

    Down With Tin Note!

I've watched quite a few youtube pipe tobacco reviews and most of them dwell on tin note. Why? It is no indication of whether the tobacco is good for smoking. If it doesn't taste good when smoked, then who cares whether tin note is any good? Good example: Planta Presbyterian tin note is one of...

Ruminations on the Individuality of Pipes

You're speaking my language. That's part of the essence of pipe smoking. One example is that I do not like the strong flavor of Elizabethan in the small bowl of my Peterson 406, but it's great in larger bowls. Another example is that I like Peterson De Luxe Navy Rolls in my small Peterson...
