Hi guys, is it okay if the pipe bowl is a bit charred ?

Can you please post a few photos so we can see you mean.

It might be anything from rim darkening (quite easily cleaned) to a bit of "lava" from over-filling the bowl (again quite an easy fix) to a nasty burn from a jet lighter

Is it char or a bit of tar? Spit will remove tar

Short term, likely nothing to be alarmed about. Moving forward, don’t over fill the bowl and hold the flame above the tobacco when lighting. Tar is inevitable, char is not.

If you look at pictures of old pipes, you will see that rim charring is very common.

I try to keep the fire in the pipe chamber and not up on the brim or on the outside of the bowl, but sometimes lighting a pipe does darken the brim a little. I take that as a mistake but also as a sign a pipe is smoked and enjoyed. I try not to do that, but I don't consider it a terrible thing. It hurts the resale value, but I don't buy pipes for their resale value.

If you get a good coffee lunger going wipe the top of the bowl and then rub it good with a soft cloth. If most of the grime doesn't come off then you have to go a different route which is more involved and I will let the pros comment on this.

Charring is not common. Tar, lava, creosote, etc. are some other names for that which can be removed. A charred rim needs repair as the briar is damaged, and not just superficially.

Beveling the inside rim of the bowl at a 45 degree angle will help prevent charring.

I like to over pack my pipes, resulting in tar/lava build up on my rims. Looks cool and helps protect the rim.

You're the same "demetri" who dropped his pipe a couple of weeks ago & then asked if it was OK to still smoke it? The very same "demetri" who, a couple of weeks prior to that asked if it was okay to smoke a pipe when it's raining? He's probably just a newb overly concerned about his pipe he spent a decent amount on. If he was a confused Chinese guy he'd instead be asking about where to find all the Esoterica and Macallan!

If you're burning the rim it means your pipe is too small, you're trying to stuff too much tobacco in there. Buy a larger pipe! And keep this one for quick smokes.
