My favourite thread of his was when he asked if it was okay to only ‘partially’ clean his pipe with a pipe cleaner. Stating that he was far too busy to order anymore pipe cleaners & he didn’t want any added expense! I’ve noticed after his initial post, starting a thread he never replies or return’s to his own threads. He’ll just turn up in another couple of weeks time with yet another banal question or observation. God only knows what his next question will be.……can Czech tools be used for lobotomies perhaps? Or, I think my pipe is looking at me in a funny way….should I be concerned? I don’t know, maybe it’s me & I'm going nuts! Lately though, with an increasing number of weird posts & introductions from some suspect people, I’m pretty sure it’s them & not me.
When I read his posts it’s obvious to me he’s a new pipe smoker whose first language wasn’t English. True Parable time-
My father died when I was 13 years old, in September 1971. My school bus driver Hadley’s wife had died recently, and he was a handsome, kind, polite, well mannered retired LAPD policeman and my mother fell in love and they were married in June 1972.
Hadley was and remains absolutely the neatest and most organized person I’ll ever meet, yet he wasn’t anal about his fastidiously ordered and arranged life. He’d clean and arrange his things while regaling me with stories of life as a policeman in Los Angeles.
Hadley had exactly a dozen nice pipes all perfectly arranged in a walnut pipe holder with a jar in the middle, like I own several on display in my office today.
One day I thought I’d do Hadley a favor and clean up all his pipes.
Each one had a careful cake the thickness of a dime, and I reamed them all out, and then used steel wool and vodka to get them as close to new inside as I could.
He walked in his garage and I proudly announced my work to him.
The look of pain on his face made me realize he had kept those pipes caked because he wanted them that way. All he said was —
Ohhhhhh Nooo
He recovered quickly, and sat down with me and said will you help me get them all caked again?
Let’s not let your mother catch us, either.
About the only mistake Hadley ever made I knew of in his life was falling in love with my beautiful mother.
He went on to marry another woman who’d light his smokes and have an occasional drink and not bitch at him night and day for not being my father.
