    Best Shag Cut Blends?

Several of the GH&co. shags—Kendal dark, dark birdseye, Kendal Kentucky—are now all the same tobacco sold under these different names. This tobacco tastes of hardwood smoke—“campfire-y” in my opinion. An option that hasn’t been mentioned above are the RYO tobaccos sold as pipe tobacco. The ones...

Looking for a Pipes and Philosophy Group

I light up my pipe and listen to Philosophize This! Or Philosophy Bites— both excellent philosophy podcasts. Sometimes I watch those old BBC Bryan Magee philosophy series. As for a serious face to face philosophy group that tolerates pipe smoking? Well I’m not getting my hopes up

    Tobaccos With A Nic Hit?

The best nic hit I’ve found by far is with whole leaf tobaccos: Kentucky burley, red tips, dark air cured, especially. And I’m saying this as a regular smoker of c&d “power burleys,” five brothers, and dark Birds Eye.

Ruminations on Keeping Cheap Shag Tobacco Humidified

Influenced by you, Mr. Lee, I tried 4 aces red. For me, it tastes a bit better dry, partly because it seems to reduce the topping, which tastes, to me, like a good imitation of the flavorings used in “full flavor” commercial cigarettes . I enjoyed that flavoring for the nostalgia appeal the...

Creating your own Cigar Leaf blends?

I used to play around with c&d’s chopped cigar leaf, blending it burley and various other things, but I never really liked it. Right now tho I’m smoking a bowl of WLT Paraguay Flojo Ligero straight and loving it. I plan to try blending it soon but for me it’s definitely one that can be...

    TAD Acquisitions 2024

After watching a video, I removed the ribs of a few leaves, rolled them up tight, sliced with a SHARP knife, making a rough cut. Then I smoked it

    New Ardor Meteora

I love the carving on that pipe. I wish more of today’s pipe companies would get back into carved/grooved surfaces

    Looking for a Custombilt

I saw a nice curved billiard custombilt at blue room briars this morning, in the new estates section

    Collecting Ethos

I have little interest in collections or assortments. I don’t like thinking about the pipe when I smoke. I want to be so accustomed to the pipe that it is practically invisible to me, so to speak. To achieve that, I keep the number of pipes I have and smoke to a minimum, and I don’t want any of...

Good and Bad Experiences Smoking in Public

Positive comment:”man, I love that pipe.” Negative comment (I guess): “hey, it beats vaping.” Neutral comment (guy to his significant other): “that guy’s smoking a pipe.” Common comments: “you got any juice in that thing?” “ Most people say nothing

    Mango Wood for Pipe??

Mango is in the poison ivy family and contains the same irritants, though in lesser amounts. Although I like pipes of unusual woods—I’m smoking a maple mm right now—I’d hesitate before smoking a mango pipe

OTC Burley Blends with Perique, Picayune Esque?

C&d’s Izmir Turkish is extremely similar to ramback

    Hard Bop.

I love jazz. I like hard bop—especially the Hubbard album mentioned in the linked article. Lately I lean more towards this mystical strain of cool jazz—I don’t know what the sub-genre is called—but Charles Lloyd, , some yusef lateef, Chico Hamilton, Jimmie giuffre—dreamy stuff that often...

OTC Burley Blends with Perique, Picayune Esque?

You've explored a question I've been wondering about for some time. I have half a dozen jars or so of OTC burley blends that I never smoke. Today I'll blend some perique into them, let them sit a bit, and see what happens.

Did the Founding Fathers Smoke Pipes?

I’m interested in what they were smoking, nonstop or not, in those pipes. Some kind of heirloom air cured, but would it have been like our burley? Or piled longer like cigar tobacco?

    A Deertongue Story

I see from your profile that you’re from Fargo! I ride my bike through that town (and Homerville, Pearson etc ) all the time on my way to crisp county.

Preferred Bowl Size For Burley Blends

If I am smoking a codger burley blend, the pipe doesn’t matter for me. If I am smoking straight dark burley, as I usually do, the pipe can make a big difference, and I choose according what qualities I want to bring out in burley.
