Captain Black Grape Is the New Penzance

Seems to me CB Grape will replace for the Legendary Mixture 79 in our minds and hearts. The stuff is actually better than Middleton's Cherry Blend, so it has that going for it.

Pipes That Hold a Special Meaning

These are great stories. Many of my pipes have memories attached to them, but the most ignificant is attached to a pipe that I lost. My wife, Lisa, gave me a Peterson K&P stamped Churchwarden, NOS, that had come from Autralia, for my birthday in 1986. She passed on in 1992. I still have the...

Why Buy a New Pipe After Smoking Used Estate Pipes?

It's been awhile since I bought an estate pipe, as the prices have gotten way out of line. The pleasure of cleaning up a nice old estate was the closest I could get to making a pipe myself, and that was the thing I liked most about doing it. Depending on who you buy from, new pipes are not...

    Are You Serious? Fallen Falcon

I bought a French made Edwards that had a cracked shank, cobwebs in the bowl, and the airway was plugged with wood, possibly a toothpick. It cleaned up nicely, and is one of my favorite hack around pipes. But I don't think I would try and tackle that Falcon.

What Pipe Finishes Are Dissolved by Water?

Getting back to the original question, I am not sure. I dropped a lit Kaywoodie right smack into a full cup of Earl Grey, and some of the finish came off of that pipe as well. I let it dry, polished it, and applied a coating of Paragon wax. I imagine a lot of pipe stains were water based...

    A Good Full Bend Pipe?

Full bent pipes get a bad reputation for smoking wet. I like them because they hang from the jaw effortlessly, though the Oom Paul's are the definition of a true nose warmer. One can get smoke through the bit or up the noise equally well. I have 5 of them. My Peterson XL 315 makes a teaspoon...

    Bijou... Anyone?

I recently opened a tin of Bijou, around 2 years old. The Katerini seemed to be dominant, with a sour note on top of the Virginia flavor, with no sweetness at all. I actually liked it, and smoked through the tin in about a month as part of my rotation. I have another tin that I purchased out of...

    Chacom and Butz Coquin

Absolutely. I imagine that if I had purchased a Butz Choquin of a higher caliber, it might have been a better pipe. But I paid $45.00 in 1983 for this pipe, a Butz Choquin d'Accord. Quite pricey back then for a disappointing smoke.

    Chacom and Butz Coquin

The one Butz Choquin I have was purchased in 1983 or so. I find that it is really unsuitable in hot, damp, Louisiana, because it smokes hot and wet in ambient air temperatures above 50 degrees. I feel the heavy lacquered finish is the cause. I have removed the heavy finishes from cheaper...
