Ruminations on Why Better Briar Smokes Better

The mills really only dry it until it's stable enough for transport. Every large order of briar (and remember I am not under ANY conditions ordering truly large orders, I'm talking 100 blocks not 10000) I've gotten has shown up not-quite-ready-to-work. But the briar is boiled, it's "clean"...

Ruminations on Why Better Briar Smokes Better

Some pipes smoke better than others. It's physics, and the physics includes the smoking media, the wood, for sure. But the idea that some particular type of briar smokes better than some other type... man, that's a tough go when you test it out. Every time you think it's a certain cut, a...

    Remove Varnish on New Pipes

"Breathes" is not a very meaningful term in that wood doesn't have lungs. But briar, like all wood, is constantly exchanging moisture with the ambient air around it. In a dry climate, briar is more dry inside than in a wet climate. This is why cabinet doors are made with panels, it's why...

    Plumbing Advice

Yeah just turn the water valve off, disconnect it, unscrew the bottom floor bolts and lift the toilet off. Hopefully the glasses are sitting there in the bottom of the toilet.

    Fake Dunhill Pipes on Etsy?

The claim was that a fake Dunhill is listed for sale. It's not the case. I'm not vouching for the vendor, I'm saying that the pipe in question is a real Dunhill.

    Fake Dunhill Pipes on Etsy?

    Now that is proper scamminess.

    Fake Dunhill Pipes on Etsy?

People are convinced there's hundreds of fake dunhills being made every day, and it's just not true. The fakes are usually dead obvious (wrong stamping, wrong shape/finish) and sometimes less obvious but to a trained eye, there are process-marks that pipes of every brand bear. Anyone faking...

    Fake Dunhill Pipes on Etsy?

So, the pipe in the link is almost certainly a real Dunhill to my eye. What makes you think it's fake? The stem work is correct, shape, button size, shape and size of tenon, etc.

Dunhill LC Pipes & Modern Iterations

Oh Robert Telfer too, and like Max, he's doing curved drilling. My pipes are conventionally drilled. (Edit I suppose it's JUST possible that Max's pipes as shown are a straight drilling.) The original LCs were not, they were curve-drilled in some French factory.

Dunhill LC Pipes & Modern Iterations

Gustavo Cunha (Maretlo pipes) does some fun LC stuff, Michael Parks does a version... but they are few and far between. Difficult, treacherous, and far easier to do badly than correctly.

    Uneven Tenon

Thing with nail polish is that you can apply it in micro-thin doses, and it's sandable if you get too much. Epoxy is going to make that pipe never fit together again, is my guess. We're talking about 1/1000th of an inch.

    The Charatan Replacement Blends.

The "house flavor" is indeed usually missing from Dunhill clones. I don't know what it is, the "thickness" of the flavor, that leathery feel to the smoke.

    Tight Stem / Tenon

Savinelli tenons are teflon or delrin, they aren't vulcanite and don't take well to sanding. Taking wood out of the mortise, the .005" we are talking about is easy and painless, and much safer than things like graphite where you aren't reducing the stress on the mortise, but reducing the...

    Tight Stem / Tenon

Briar moves with humidity changes. If it's super tight, you may have to put a little sandpaper around a pencil or something and take just a little material out of the mortise (takes only a twist or two, we are talking 1/1000th of an inch).
