An Interesting Pipe, An Interesting Smoke: As I said I would yesterday, I'll post the initial smoke and a couple of snapshots of my new Old German Clay Briar Pot.

It's not quite what I expected in a Pot, but it was advertised as one, so a Pot it is. And it is a sweet smoker indeed, in spite of all. First the pics, and analysis underneath. The initial smoke was Smokers' Pride Black Cavendish, an aro I enjoy very much, both by itself, and as a mixer.

As you can see from the top picture, it's profile is nice indeed but, in the second picture you can see that the stem is more like a Canadian rather than the usual pot, and is also not only long, but oval in shape. The bowl is also very deep. So the long oval stem has to be considered in the break in itself, as part of the bowl.

The smoke was surprisingly delightful for a break-in, and as the pipe is quite capacious and the tobacco favoured by me and a cheap thrill, I've decided that Smoker's Pride Black Cavendish is going to be it. And I don't have a problem with this. So, for this pipe, fait accompli.

I'll try to get back later to do some retrograde commenting 'cause there are some beauties posted today and yesterday, but the doorbell has just arrived and so has the madding hoard.

And, to re-iterate, it is a sweet smoker indeed. I'll enjoy an afternoon hour with SPBC each time this pipe comes up in rotation. Cheers for now.
I’ve had one of their vulcanite steamed clays on my wishlist for a while…. I’ll pull the trigger someday.

One of my favorite go-to classics in this Comoy's billiard. It's nice to have something to return to that's always reliable, always enjoyable. Sweet, refreshing, zesty, with just enough Latakia for interest. Can't ask for much more in a tobacco blend according to my tastes.

@damacene that is a cool Comoy's! Nice blast and rim! Do you know what year/era it is from?

Gentlemen, it’s the last day of the year. The old one is still smoldering in the bowl, while the New Year is quietly approaching. Wishing everyone calm, thoughtful smokes, good health, warmth at home, and a year ahead where tobacco brings pleasure, pipes smoke cool and dry, and life doesn’t demand unnecessary haste.
Happy upcoming New Year! 🎄🥂

No sooner had the ranch finally started to dry out that I found myself battening down the hatches once again. Therefore, I chose something special for what might have been my final smoke of the year, the last of a jar of Drew Estate Grand Central in my aromatic pipe, a Savinelli Miele 641 KS smooth bent apple. Got one more tin left (translation: TinBids here I come!), but I've got several other new-to-me aromatics to try first. 9/10

Bird report: Dark-eyed junco, California towhee, House finch, California scrub-jay, California quail, Chipping sparrow, Oak titmouse, White-crowned sparrow, Steller's jay, Common raven (got the mouse carcass I left for it!), Mountain chickadee, White-breasted nuthatch, Northern flicker, and Spotted towhee.

I know I joke around on here a lot, but in all seriousness, 2025 was a very mixed year for me, and weighted toward the 👎 side, for sure. Wishing everyone here a better and brighter 2026! 🥂 🙏

Anchorage has been experiencing the coldest spell we’ve had in maybe 25 years. As a kid I remember every winter getting temps in the -20s, but thankfully it’s been warmer lately. This cold spell was only as low as the negative teens, but still way too cold to enjoy a pipe. I haven’t smoked a bowl since Thanksgiving.

Today it “warmed up” to 14 degrees so I took the dog out and tried a new blend I’m calling “Joe’s Secret Ingredient.” It’s a mix of 40% long-cut bulk Perique, 40% rubbed out Samual Gawith 1792 Flake and 10% of a bulk Latakia forward blend. To this I added some chopped A. Fuente cigar leaf. I moistened the blend with dark rum and have been letting it meld. I added a pinch to one of my Burley cherry blends. I used one of my home-made cobs because it’s easy to clench and I was keeping my hands in my coat pocket. The secret ingredient was an excellent way to make a fairly mild aromatic much more robust; just the thing for a crisp afternoon walk when it’s well below freezing!

Edit: Since we're covering ornithology, yesterday I watched a Northern Shrike catch and eat a Red-breasted Nuthatch in my back yard. We've had Bald Eagles, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Norther Saw Whet Owls back there as well.

Relaxing after a wonderful salad, mahi-mahi and sugar snap peas dinner with strawberries for dessert. Part way through this bowl of Ken Byron Ventures Mr. Christian’s Brown Flek 2021 in a straight smooth brown 1950s Comoy’s Selected Straight Grain Extraordinaire bulldog 5 with a diamond shape shank and black vulcanite saddle stem. This pipe is from the estate of David Cuneo. Community Coffee, neat, is my drink. Tomato the Brave didn't show up for feeding time. As cold as it is, I wonder where he is. The others are inside. Watching the first Gunsmoke episode when Burt Reynolds joined the cast.
