Random Post, Tuesday Dec 16. Good Afternoon. Or evening, as the case may be. Given This Day Has 7 Pills, until this thing is over with or I decide to pull the plug and flush them down the toilet, which has happened 3 times in my life, whereupon my health has significantly improved.
I've hunkered down the past couple of days, with the first two of three books recommended to me by
@Choatecav . . . . ("Pipesmoking", a 21st Century Guide by Richard Carleton Hacker, and "The Pipe Book" by Alfred Dunhill.) what eye openers!! especially since my decision to begin a more structured pipe collecion, as I've described before.
Another, and completely unrelated book has also arrived, "Windswept House" by Malachi Martin, and so between the pipes and the Malachi Martin, maintaining a modiicum of my pipesmoking rotation (successfully I might add), I confess to being a bit scattered.
I've got about half a dozen or ten smokes to post about, and I'll approach them randomly, as the spirit leads. With respect to the collection, there has been one arrival today, two priors, and a bunch en route. I'll cover the priors later tonight.
Here's today's arrival:
It's a
freehand pipe, from the "
Royal Wooden Collection", (whoever they are), made in the Ukraine, is obviously Mr Brog influenced, 7 1/2" long, made of Pearwood (a wood that I have about half a dozen pipes made from - all smoke very nicely) - with brass fittings, was unique and cheap on Amazon. So I snagged it. Very well made and will remain unsmoked until it's turn.
I took the snap on the cover of one of my favourite encores, Tambourine Chinois by Fritz Kreisler. Tambo is a nasty little thing to play, a lot crammed into 2 1/2 minutes. I think I've performed it two times, maybe three, and was preparing it as one of a few encores for my farewell before retirement concert before covid struck. The music was lying on my "to-do" pile, alas, not to be played by me again, something I regret. It would have played very suitably with a couple of others, as a foil to the
Mozart Concerto #3 on the same concert, oddly a piece I've taught dozen or so times, but never performed myself, something I also regret.
So, here is the first of today's posts - one of my new acquisitions and a little story to go along with it.
Be back later tonight with another pipe tale.
