Thanks for the info I didn't know that about the belvedere. I was just going off of the small size, since I never see Charatan's pipes so small

Two new Reuben’s Charatan’s and two firsts for me - first cutty / devils anse and first group 1 straight billiard.
Frederick and Reuben era pipes were generally small
The pipes got upsized during Lane’s stewardship
A tiny Frederic era Belge which belonged to Ken Barnes
Two Reuben era Cuttys
A group 4 sized bent Bulldog
How do you differentiate between Frederick and Reuben's ? Just size is not enough
The tiny little Belge is the only Frederick era pipe I have.
It has no stamps or markings, and is quite a bit smaller than the 2 cuttys.
I purchased it from Ken Barnes and he was definite it was a Frederick era Charatan
50's - 60's selected countryman.
Frederick era pipes won’t have a CP stem stamp, since that didn’t appear until the mid 1920’s. Also, if the pipe has any sterling on it, the makers mark will be FC.
Oh wow, the wiki needs to be updated with this crucial info about the CP logo. The FC silver stamp isn't an indicator though- i have seen too many dunhill era charatan's with it.
The Pipedia Charatan article needs some work. It’s better than it was. Ivy Ryan’s article has long been held suspect for its inaccuracies.
Hopefully a Charatan aficionado will do that.
The work done on other marques is the result of a lot of intensive work by pipe history sleuths and Charatan needs similar attention.
Heartbreaking beautiful ; the Countryman being my favourite Ch. shape.
I own three or four Selected De Luxe and Selected ones from the late fifties.
Most likely carved by Horace ( Horrie ) Jameson.
Best stay away from the "limited editon " ones; they were carved in St. Claude France.
Not meaning they are no good, but I do not consider them authentic Charatan.

My Selected Countryman. It is on its way to a new owner, a collector of Countryman pipes. The late Ken Barnes told me this about the shape:
Wonderful pipe Al, wish you sold it to me
Ken stands me corrected; not Jameson, but Tennyson carved the Countryman shape.
Briefly before his untimely demise he offered me some for sale,amongst them a lovely smooth one !
And than time took him away from us, I still miss his expertise and our many and meaningful conversations.

The briar and the grain are stunning, the stems not so much.

Note the stunning blast ; plenty birdseyes. . Pipe and box in like new condition.

I've wanted a small bent Reuben's for a long time and the last ebay estates lot delivered! It actually delivered 3 more keepers, but they belong to other threads unfortunately.
