I've just started smoking pipes about 6 months ago. I really only have smoke a pipe on the weekend in the afternoon.

My wife has pointed out that I seem to snore only on days when I smoke a pipe.

When I search online for information on pipe smoking links to snoring, all I find are articles pontificating, "Smoking is bad for you."

I'm trying to get some real answers from fellow pipe smokers.

Does anyone have this problem and any solutions?

Anything that increases airway inflammation (in my case pollen season and the Canadian wildfire smoke; and other potential causes) makes the soft palate sag and obstruct the airway. Try "pretending" you're asleep and relax your voluntary breathing. If your soft palate is obstructing your inhalation, try moving your lower jaw out in an overbite and see if that helps. In my case I think I'll resort to something like Flonase which helps with allergies and inflammation in general.

In my case snoring is weight related. Back in the day when I was 180-200 pounds I never snored.

I gained some weight and started snoring. My wife bought a white noise machine and we've had no problem since.

Sometimes I snore so loud I wake myself up.

I also fart and sweat lot more since I've gained some weight, go figure.

Funk, while it is edifying to know more about many of your bodily functions, I can agree that my wife and I tried using the white noise to drown out my snoring. Her comment was that AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" played at 11 on the volume level would not cover my snoring.

I'll let you guess about my farting and sweating.............

When she first turned that white noise on I thought it was going to run me off.

It was so loud it was comical, but I'm used to it now.

I didn't mention my foot odor or belching. I didn't want to overshare, but it may be pertinent... I believe there is a cluster of conditions that go along with being a middle aged dad/grandfather.

This.

I've had sleep apnea since puberty, more or less. I weighed 160 lbs back then.

My wife started complaining about my snoring almost from when we met when I was 30. She toughed it out and then got more and more militant. I fashioned sport mouthguards into a device that pulled my jaw forward, opening my airway a bit, but that didn't do much. Eventually my wife started wearing ear plugs and the complaints died down.

After a while, about monthly I would completely crash at my desk. I once crashed so hard that when my boss woke me up, I was dizzy for hours afterward. That was scary as hell. Then my wife told me her ears were starting to bleed from the ear plugs. That was the final straw, and I got my ass to the doctor. I did a sleep study and was waking up 30+ times an hour. I apparently hadn't had a good night's sleep in decades. He immediately put me on a CPAP and I now am pretty good on 5 hours of sleep, because I'm actually sleeping. Also my blood pressure lowered, I lost a little weight, and my mood improved. And those terrifying crashes at my desk are a thing of the past. So are my wife's complaints (about my snoring, anyway).

I started smoking a pipe earlier this year, and didn't notice any change. It's possible the CPAP is working harder but I see no indication of it. My guess is that the OP is on the borderline of snoring and the mild swelling from the irritation of pipe smoking pushed him over the line.

Thank you all for the advice.

I did a few things. I restarted using a sleeping phone app to monitor snoring. I also thought it might be associated to tongue bite.

I'm new to this pipe smoking and find I'm getting tongue bite. I've took measures to stop the tongue bite and I haven't snored for the past 2 nights.

There might be something there.
