Big fan of Five Bros, I like the simplicity of a shag cut and the single note flavor.
Does anyone know how D&R Two Timer compares?
Also like G&H Kendal Mixed, it's kind of the Virginia version of 5 Bros.
Thanks, that's helpful. Two Timer is not a shag and and is not quite as strong, but it's good stuff all the same.
I have one 2oz tin I’ve been holding onto. I should really be keeping a bottle of Scotch to age with it.P I C A Y U N E![]()

I scored a bag of Picayune and some Ryback keep em in big ol jars in the basement every once in a while I'll do a big ol bowl half n half good buzz I miss Five bros before covid so nutty really hit the spot , hoping I can get my taste back and bring it back into the daily rotation with coffeeI have one 2oz tin I’ve been holding onto. There’s something about Five Brothers that REALLY works for me after a meal. I know that’s every tobacco almost, but somehow the dryness of 5B hits just right.
Would be nice it it were available…P I C A Y U N E![]()
Bought a pound of it for a fair price of this forum Ryback is still around smaller well stocked smoke shops , but Picayune is pretty scarce these days.Would be nice it it were available…
Dark Birds Eye is no longer dark Birds Eye. But both the real thing and its replacement are quite different from 5 bros. They taste strongly of a certain type of hardwood smoke and sometimes have a whiff of that Lakeland flavor. Five bros is rougher, less complex, with a top note like ersatz cocoaHow would you gentleman compare 5bros to G&H Dark Birds Eye?
I’m no connoisseur, but I think while the nic hit is similar (strong) between the two, Dark BirdsEye is a pronounced dark fired profile, and 5Bros is just straight strong euro burley with minimal casing. How would you gentleman compare 5bros to G&H Dark Birds Eye?
DBE is far superior... to me. Much more flavor and far more complex. Also a residual sweetness that lasts a while afterwards. How would you gentleman compare 5bros to G&H Dark Birds Eye?
I agree, but I’d posit this angle:DBE is far superior... to me. Much more flavor and far more complex. Also a residual sweetness that lasts a while afterwards.

I note “euro style” as I’m not a fan of most American burley powerhouses, but can smoke Five Brothers easily (most likely because I’m prone to lots of incidental inhalation).
Interestingly, Dark BirdsEye sold recently has minimal (if any) birdseye stem cuts, while 5Bros has plenty.

So.......what you gentleman seem to saying is that I need both!I agree, but I’d posit this angle:
DBE is a better experience for times when one is smoking with intent, ie-a relaxed contemplative smoke with all the prep ritual and pipe selection involved.
5Bros shines for quality nicotine delivery when smoking codger scoops in the shop or field where the smoking is accompanying getting stuff done and not the primary activity.
….if that makes any sense![]()
I haven’t tried Dark Birds Eye, but I find 5bros similar to G&H Kendal Dark, even though that has Virginia and no birds eye.How would you gentleman compare 5bros to G&H Dark Birds Eye?
From what I understand, the birds eye are just large stems or veins that got thrown in the mix and sliced. I've only smoked a few pouches of 5 bros, including the old paper ones and yes, smoke the eyes. There are many veterans here that could answer this better though. So if you smoke 5Bros, do you smoke the birds eye too? That’s my question!
I’m no veteran of pipe smoking, but yes I smoke the eyes. It stays pretty mixed up unless you selectively sort the longer shag strands out.So if you smoke 5Bros, do you smoke the birds eye too? That’s my question!
Well, yeah!So.......what you gentleman seem to saying is that I need both!![]()
