Double Treat Today!!

Opened a mylar bag from Ken Byron: Acadian Flek. Lovely thin flakes with some broken and some intact. Smells like a stewed fruitcake and some fresh cut grass.

Opened a tin of 2022 Mature Virginia from C&D that was blended exclusively for the Chicago Land Pipe Show. Massive brownie that is on the dryer than expected side but pulls apart quite easily. This stuff smells very very much like Newminster Navy Flake, sweet, bready, and grassy.

Man I cannot wait to dig into both of these!IMG_5459.jpegIMG_5460.jpegIMG_5461.jpegIMG_5462.jpegIMG_5464.jpegIMG_5466.jpeg

Not an official tin today, but this jar of Dunhill Royal Yacht (RY) was sealed up shortly after the tin was opened in 2015. Because today’s my birthday, I thought this ten year old leaf a fitting present to myself.

Opening the jar I was greeted with the sweet summer smell of freshly bailed Timothy hay. The mixture was slightly on the dry side, but perfect to smoke.

I remember liking Royal Yacht, but this is the first time in the last ten years. I remember a slightly artificial plum flavoring, but this has subsided. Out of my dedicated Virginia briar the smoke is cool, smooth and slightly sweet, while offering a complexity to further explore.

I will need to pick up some recently canned RY to compare to my aged jar. I wish I had set aside more than one tin, but that will be rectified. I plan on splitting off about a half ounce to enjoy now, and putting the remaining 1.5 oz back on the cellar.

If I’m around In another ten years I hope to compare 20, 10, and fresh. We never know how much longer we have- might as well enjoy some of our aged tobacco along the way!

Holey Tin, Batman!
Was digging through the tubs that constitute my cellar over the weekend, and found this gift from years past. Started looking at it and found it to be rusty. Decided I should open it and jar it if it was to have any hope of being offered to the flame. Poured out the contents and sure enough, I could see through the bottom. Gave it all a good shake so any metal particles would likely be at the bottom and tossed the dust pile and only jarred the larger pieces. Loaded a cob to give it a try..... Couldn't really get past the charring light. Just not my thing - which is why it was buried so deep. This one may have to be sacrificed to something other than the flame...
