As to the coating on Castello pipes: I don't have any inside info and I'm pretty sure they are not telling, but... I would bet money that they use a light coating of button shellac to finish them off. It would take a chemical analysis to determine for sure. Anyone want to donate a pipe and pony up the lab fees so we can find out?

4k is clearly exaggerated here, the grain texture is nothing special
