Why is Magnum Opus Just Magnum Now?

So I was browsing the H&H line and noticed Magnum Opus dropped the Opus in the name. When did this happen? And, more importantly, did the blend change?

I know Russ used to be on these boards. Not sure if that is still the case.

This is one of my favorite blends so when I saw it, I got concerned.

It was considered an infringement on the Opus X Arturo Fuente trademark.

how far did it go? I imagine it wouldn't have to go far. Arturo could have literally just said you can sell one or the other not both. Or did lawyers get paid a lot too?

Shrewd move. Lawyers are masters at, amongst other things, dragging out legal proceedings so as to maximize their profits. With money and time always in short supply. it's best to steer clear of these things.

Interesting. Well, sounds like the blend itself is safe which is what matters most.

Though I do kind of miss the 'opus' even though I was never that fond of the name, overall.

I supposed it to be a trademark issue but Opus X did not come to mind. That said, I have no idea what is claimed in that trademark so I'm just making noise.

o.k. so I sorta see their point but that's a complete and total bully move. Basically saying we don't have a leg to stand on but we can force you into a legal battle you can't afford. The fact that it looks like this is the first move and it doesn't look like they tried being nice first means I know one cigar brand I won't bother buying anymore of.

from my understanding it's not and the lawyers probably agree considering they said in "their opinion" instead of saying a more assertive declaration such as it is a violation of their trademark.

Lawyers say that...well, almost never. Assertiveness is basically anathema to the legal profession. Legalese is a funny thing--a word can literally have a dozen different meanings (none of which are the meaning of the word in normal, regular, everyday discourse, naturally) and you can just pick and choose which one you want it to mean to advance whatever agenda is most lucrative.

Ironically, legal opinions frequently have no legal standing. They just make the one offering them up sound more important than they actually are.

Geez, the Fuente brand spent decades building up their customer base, made money in the process, then now that it's only Carlito AKA Island Charlie running the show, it's become a brand better suited for rap videos and the TikTok crowd. Hell, I just read his daughter Liana up and quit recently and just a couple years ago, she was the darling that would eventually take over the business.

Don't know what's going on over there, but it's not good and the brand is being abandoned by long-time supporters, including those who used to be very involved in the CF Charitable Foundation. Sad.
