I have some Dark Star that's been "cellared" (however it's been in its own humidor specifically at 70%) and I had tried one bowl of it. It's pretty good but I hear it's going for quite a bit for some reason. I think it's mellowed nicely.

Interesting. Some places are selling it for over $1000 and I wasn't sure why.

That’s standard for most McClelland blends these days in an unopened tin. Decanted, the price drops.
Ah yes. It does indeed drop if opened. 1$ a gram is even a bit high. Some Christmas Cheer ie 2016 & 2016 are going for .75 to .80 cents a gram on Pipestud. If opened, the value can decrease substantially. What would you say @sablebrush52 ?

Funny, I'm a bit of a noob/total noob? and this is the first tobacco that popped up on my radar as a MUST TRY and then... voila - it's the priciest I've seen! lol
Honestly, just move past it to the second thing. I mean it tastes nice, but its a bit of a pain in the arse to keep lit. And of course it is out of production and therefore expensive.

I think they were well worth the $16 I paid for them when they were released. As much as I like Christmas Cheer and other McClelland blends, there's nothing I've tasted to justify my spending $80 to $100 for a tin of it, much less the $280 I've seen them listed for on line.

There's something kind of ironic about scalping people over a product celebrating a Holiday that's supposed to be about love and generosity.

But nobody is putting a gun to anyone's to drop a wad of cash over a tin of tobacco.

I take it you're not a historian. Because you'd say it's a holiday about drunken debauchery, extortion, and the joys of vandalism and cruel pranks.

You’re referring to Christmas during the Medieval period, when gangs of marauders went about committing rape, torture, murder and all manner of atrocities since they would be absolved of all responsibility by the Church at the end of the 12 days.
I’m aware of it, and more.

However, it’s a little different now. Today, any crimes related to observing the Holiday are financial.

I like Dark Star quite a bit, and I’m glad I’ve got a couple of tins left. Everyone’s taste is different, of course, but Dark Star is not the McClelland blend I would buy if I had decided to drop the $$$ on some. It wouldn’t even be in the top 5.

I am and you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you talk about it. Which brings up a question would you like to go olde school caroling with me, Brobs, and Cosmic next Christmas?

You mean committing rape, torture, burning people alive in their homes and other Medieval Christmas pleasantries? Nah.

The bad taste this left lasted for centuries. Observance of Christmas was at one point outlawed in the American Colonies.

Then, merchants discovered that people like exchanging cards, and there was money in it, and the transformation and rehabilitation of what had once been a very minor Holiday and a time of terror was transformed by Coca-Cola into the commercial colossus it is today.

Hmmmmm...on second thought, gouging for Christmas Cheer isn't enough in keeping in the spirit. At the very least it should also include droit du seigneur as well.

Noobs don't realize that Butera Royal Vinage: Dark Stoved is the same blend. Both are made with Yellow Virginia's and both are processed with that special Mc topping. I doubt anyone could tell the difference between them in a blind taste test.

Pipestud is more or less in a position to set the price in the secondary market; but I would also add that he more or less had a hand in developing that market and the customers that come along with it.

Funny how terms like scalping and gouging have to be applied... There are all kinds of items that are out of production, hard to find, in short supply. As long as the demand is there, and people are willing to pay the price, it's between them, and none of my business...

Prices for unicorns can be all over the map. If the price is something you can justify, then have at it.

McClelland tins are certainly more expensive now that they are no longer available from the mfr, but Steve Fallon is about as fair as fair can be and if I wanted any tobacco I wouldn't hesitate to buy it from him. In fact, I did not have enough frog morton on hand when McClelland went out of business and Steve is the guy who I went to. And yes I paid for more than retail, but honestly a 50 g tin of tobacco lasts me a long time because I only smoke maybe once a week. I have 100 g tins too.

When I think about the price of a box of cigars and the price of a vintage pipe tobacco the numbers seem to even out in favor of the pipe tobacco. I don't think Steve is gouging at all, and anyone who has prices that are too high simply will not sell the goods.

As for dark star? Fugeddaboudit good. Amazing. The more people who lack the ability to smoke it the better for those of us who can...more tins for sale / trade!!
