I did not break any speed records but 3 and a half months in I have completed my first pipe. Everything was done by hand with coping saw, files and sandpaper. Even the wax (Paragon) was by hand (I was not expecting to get as much luster as I did). This hand made "quality" has given the pipe its own character.

This pipe is a monster as I knew it would be when I ordered the block and stem. I wanted to make something I could not, or would be reluctant, to buy when more "practical" options were available.

    The stats
    Length: 18.6cm/ 7 3/8 inches
    Bowl height: 58mm/ 2 5/16 inches
    Chamber depth: 48mm/ 1 7/8 inches
    Chamber width: 22mm/ 7/8 inch
Weight: unknown but I won't be clenching!

and this is where it all started

You did a beautiful job, and the smokes should taste all the better for it having been the product of your own work.
There's some really nice cross grain on that bowl.

Will you be doing another one soon?

    Great job! Love big pipes.

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

The time you put into the pipe payed off. Great final product. Great shape. Good for you.

Thanks eveyrone. I look forward to starting the break in process.

Cortez: I'll do another one but maybe not till next winter. I sure learned a lot doing this one and it would be great to start the process with a little knowledge.

The maiden voyage was today with some Rattray's Red Rapparee. It was superb. I have not broken in many pipes to compare it with but this was as smooth as could be.

Impressive first pipe! I'm sure you'll be having some looong smokes with it.

I wonder if it's still being smoked, 2 years later.

The OP is currently enjoying some sun in the Australian Highland where the wifi is hard to come by. He is surprised at the resurrection of this old thread but pleased about the comments. This is still the only pipe he has made. It gets some use but only when he knows he has the time to sit and smoke it. The good weather months soon to hit the PNW will give it a greater chance of use. I keep thinking I'll make one or two more in my life. One to fill a gap in my rotation and one as a gift for my brother. I am in no rush to make these but I look forward to shaping a couple of clearly hand made daily smokers even though my brothers one will just sit on a shelf.

Thanks. I just finished a half bowl is this pipe (Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake). It lasted a pleasant 1.5 hours.

I left all my travel tobacco and a Savinelli Alligator Canadian with my brother when I left Australia and it turns out it is getting some use. This means I might be closer to making my second pipe.

Totally outstanding, thought mine was good, carve your own. Yours is in a different league. Bet you lost some sleep carving round that shank. Mine may not be a prom queen but boy she smokes, and that's what we want!
