The only acceptable background music would ideally be Jefferson Airplane; however, if Grace Slick invokes images of a different type of pipe weed, don't despair: just put on Led Zeppelin, preferably starting with "When the Levee Breaks," as several astute readers have already observed.
If I had to actually read all those rules, it would force me to quit pipe smoking.
As for music, You guys are all entitled to your opinions as wrong as they may be. The best pipe smoking music I have encountered is the soft warbling of song birds in the backyard with no distractions from wife, children, barking dogs or loud motorized vehicles. Just the singing of the Bluejays, Cardinals and doves set to the barking of the squirrels in the neighboring trees.
But on some afternoons I will admit to turning on some swamp blues.
