Here's an oddball.

I came across an old sealed cutter-top of State Express 777 cigarettes and the price was so low that I couldn't pass them up. I thought I'd try and break them open to smoke, and I did smoke a few bowls, but this stuff is strong, very tart and also peppery like perique. I have no idea what type of tobacco went into this blend, possibly some strange Turkish or Oriental, but I was amazed at how stout 'n zesty it was!

Another tin of St. Bruno, this stuff much older than the 80's one I had earlier, and in fine shape against all the years!

And an extremely rare 1oz. foil packet from way back when, I was very surprised how well this stuff held up, being only protected by cardboard and thick foil!

Finally, a glorious gift from PM member klause, he's from Ireland and was most generous to kindly send this my way, along with a 50g pouch of Yachtsman Plug too, I ain't opened that one yet though.

I cannot thank him enough!

Kevin had the honors at KC 2012 in opening a tin of Aristocrat.
What the hell is Aristocrat?

Damned if I know!

The answer?

Not easy to come by!

We also had a surprise... one of our tablemates in the tent had a tin from Benadaret's of San Francisco, CA, in its mailing package, dating to 1967. The blend name was Aristocrat. It took the combined efforts of Brian Levine, Greg Peace, Mike McNeil, AND a phone call to Marty Pulvers, to deduce what the blend was and who had manufactured it!

I recently found an old tin of Dobie's Blend No. 7, as I said on this thread

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/ye-olde-united-kingdom-tobacco-tins-pictorial-massive-images-

and it's already got here, pretty quick, it came from Huntsville Alabama, close to me...I had no idea what to expect, not knowing anything about the blend, well, I just opened it and discovered it's a Latakia blend, it still has a strong aroma, it was really cool to smell the stuff upon opening, but it's bone-dry and I got it re-hydrating right now, the bacca itself seemed in good condition, no mold, but compressed like a cake over the years, the tin is rather odd, not a screw seal, but just a ridge, and it popped open rather easily, although it might not be "real" Dobie, it wasn't made in Scotland, but in Great Britain, I dunno, I also have no idea of the time period this came from, hardly any Dobie's info out there, anyways, this is what it looks like:

(pictures from the seller of the tin are in the other thread I linked to)

Misterlowercase, what stores do you frequent that involves something as casual sounding as "coming across" a sealed tin of 777 cigarettes?

Well, yes indeed, those 777's are scarce I reckon. I found 'em online, $12.75 shipped, the seller said she found 'em on a roadtrip --- I guess stuff like this is still layin' around old dusty haunts somewhere!
I've posted a vintage tin heads-up here regarding some cheap John Cotton's once with the link where to find it and a PM brother ended up scoring it, I was broke as a hobo at the time, but felt the need to pass along the info.
There's stuff out there all over the place, yet even in the most heavily traffic'd joints, one can still find a good bargain, like say a $5 Dunhill on eBay?!?!?

England made Smoking Pipe

...sure the nomenclature is fairly worn, but it's legible and the pipe has cleaned up right nicely, a classic 1966 shape 40 lovat!

In todays mailbox, I received a couple more old tins I picked up on the cheapie cheap. These are small 1oz size tins which are kinda neat. I don't know why Erinmore keeps knockin' on my door, but it seems she always somehow finds a way to me, this time in the form of mixture. It doesn't have near the potent aroma I experienced with the flake version from 70's Murray's, more subdued entirely, but its darkened so much over the years that it almost looks like Latakia!

:

...but what I was really interested in was this rarely seen Sinclair's Navy Cut, just having the little tin makes me happy, but to see the secret of what was inside also tickled me pink, within the tin were curlies, cut nearly paper thin, kind of an odd nose, but otherwise from being dry, it's in pretty good looks.
