I was just wondering if anyone here collects pipes like these and if they do, do they actually smoke them or just look at them? I’m seeing these on an auction site. I’ve no idea what they’ll sell for. They look like they belong in a museum. I’m not even sure if they are all made of briar or something else (some of them). I don’t personally think I want something just to look at. I have one small historical pipe I don’t smoke and I think I’m getting rid of it. But these are super interesting pipes to look at. One of these looks like an Anne Julie (or I should say she has a pipe that looks like one of these).

The three decorated pipes are Meerschaum, and I don't think they're as old as they look. The stems look pretty modern, but could be later additions. Id say they're less than 125 years old. The wood pipes are kinda clay shaped but look very amateurish to me, possibly home made. They all have the air something thats been made to look old to me. I have plenty of 100+ year old meerschaums and I smoke every one of them. I smoke far fewer of my 100+ year old briars, but I smoke some of them. I can tell you that none of them are Anne Julie pipes, I have a couple of her pipes and they are pretty straight forward Danish push bit affairs. If it were an A. Julie or an A. Julie Stanwell it would have a standard vulcanite push bit.

Pipe No3 could be clay, hard to tell though.

I know they’re not Anne Julie. I was suggesting that she may take cues from some antique designs such as those. I’m no expert but I think these are genuinely old pipes. They were posted along with one Copenhagen Larsen, some 60s Dunhills, and I think an old Pipe Dan. I don’t think these are fakes.

No I don't think those are fakes, but the Dan has a completely destroyed stem and Dunhill has pretty bad rim. The Larsen looks ok, but the picture does not show the button which I suspect is pretty chewed up.

I don't know that the old pipes are necessarily fakes either, they just look modified and amateurish to me. The P-Lip is on the one is definitely not original. And the wood pipes look like a turn of the century attempt to at carving clay pipe shapes.

I see what you mean. Yes. Well, I’ll follow and see what they go for. I’m interested what people will pay. Here’s my one pipe that I think is pretty old. But it has a hole in it below the button and I think I’ll get rid of it: CB7A2432-4095-4586-BB63-9AF49F37E7C9.jpeg

That is a factory all briar pipe, many companies made em, its probably form between 1890 and 1915. C.P.F. and WDC made quite few as did several French Companies. I think it's nice looking old pipe.

Thanks for that information! I didn’t know. It’s a very handsome little pipe. It’s tiny.
By in large turn of the century pipes do tend be on the smaller side, those little one piece all briar pipes tended to be small even by turn of the century standards. They were typicaly sold 5-10 cents at a time when a good briar or meer could range from $1-5. They were really working class pipes sold cheap. Not a lot of them survived though because they were so cheap they were basically disposable. You have very nice example there.

Thanks! Unfortunately, it has this small hole but I guess that goes a long with what you’re saying: it was a bit cheap even if it’s quite catching. I mean it’s really nice to look at. I’m surprised it survived as well as it did. It had the hole when I bought it. I smoked it once and I realized that any saliva on it is no good. I may try to sell or trade it because I don’t think I’ll smoke it. I like it but don’t use it. Thanks for your information. I enjoy knowing more about this stuff. I find myself a bit obsessed with looking at pipes recently.

Agreed, smoking all briar pipes is a bit like chewing on popsicle sticks.

When you say "it has a hole below the button" can you please elaborate
Please show where the "hole" is
Preferably an enlarged photo rather a photo of the whole pipe

These are just what I had from what I did with my camera. I’m in Japan and I was thinking of putting them for sale here. I bought the pipe from Europe in this condition. It’s cool to have but very small. It’s what I like about it but also it makes it not very practical for me.

A quick fix will be to use a silicon/rubber bit or silicon tape/tubing

You could try fixinf with CA (Super)glue.
There are a few threads on the Forums re:fixing holes like that - albeit on vulcanite or acrylic stems
Otherwise look up Rebornpipes for "How To ....." instructions

Yes. I was thinking about it. I saw it on reborn. They’ve done it on the bottom of the bowl. The rubber bits are too big but screw protectors work just the same. Still, I don’t get around to smoking it and mostly just look at it.

It’s a piece of pipe making history
Orific bit, so pre-1930 or even earlier
Unfortunately wood gets wet, soggy and soft.
Still a nice piece to have for the occasional smoke

Yes. It’s a marvel. And it’s very handsome. I like having a little piece of history. I’m a bit torn on keeping it or selling it toward something else, perhaps an historical pipe I might use more often. But then again, it’s not worth a lot monetarily - probably. It might be best to keep.
