Several Forums members have mentioned microfiber as a good way to spruce up Vulcanite stems, and

suggested what I assume are several rather fine grade microfibers as the right ones. Clutter being one

of my vices, I'd like to get a really modest selection of, say, three of the appropriate grade microfibers

in appropriate small sizes. I only have four or five pipes in need of immediate attention. Some of these

are thirty plus years old, bought new and used carefully, but they need the stems brightened up a bit from

a little gray-green discoloration that has set in over the years. They don't look bad, but I owe them a

spiffing up. Where (what sort of store) would have a small selection of the right fine grade microfibers for

this extra small job? Any specific brands to look for? Retailers to suggest? I hate to send my old friends off

to a pipe repairman when I can do this here.

I bought my micro-mesh from a woodworking supply online, but you can get it cheaper on Ebay. You only need say 3 different grits- Coarse, medium, and superfine- maybe 1500, 8000, and 12000.

A lot of people like the Micro Mesh Pads:

I prefer the original cloth.

I use these with good results: http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/micro-finishing-cloth-abrasive-pads-516765/
The display clamshell opens easily and allows me to store the pads once they have dried. I find that I use the full range.

I prefer the 3" x 6" unpadded sheets and typically get them from Rockler.

I'll change the title of this thread.

I just ordered a set of micromesh pads from Peachtree yesterday for this express purpose. They work great for restoring the finish on my knives too.

Micromesh is really a good investment. I really like the original pads too because they're more flex able than the padded ones. Folding them around a thin knife blade does a great job on stubborn little corner spots like the button. I've had beautiful results with a magic eraser, then the 3200 grit, then 4000, 8000 and finally 12000. Your stems will look like new.

Wow. A goldmine here. I'll make some notes, and save some links. Thank you, gentlemen.

I got my pads from Stewmac.com because I had a gift card for there sitting around for 2yrs. They work well, but, after maybe 8 pipes the micro-mesh layer started peeling/falling off the pad. Bit annoying. When dried out I'll have to get some glue I guess.
If not for the gift card, I'd have used eBay for cheaper options.
I find I use the 3M wet sand papers from the auto store more often though for the bulk of the oxidation removal (400/600/800/1500/2000). I also wrap a piece around a file, and use the sharp edge to get into the little corner where the button is. The pads I use more for after I file out tooth marks and such.

The micro-mess files (they look like emery boards for your fingernails) work wonders for getting into those sharp corners.

If you need just a few grits and don't want to buy a complete set let me know. I have rolls of micro mesh. I can send you some.
