I was referring to the Topic of this post and the original is all, that in both, I didn’t see any discussion of Cigar Ash Queen.

Yes I have seen all of her posts.

And I also thought that the topic of discussion was only about the worth of expensive pipes, if it meant they were actually better smokers.

So, this is why I replied, it seemed like your reply was Off Topic.
Try reading again. Both of my posts talked about the title which you seemed to have missed.

What are you talking about, I thought the original post was merely about the quality differences of a low priced pipe vs an expensive pipe is all, I don’t understand your reply?

P.S. @JKoD I hope you don’t get barked at to bad, because usually when a post is closed you can’t go an open another under the same topic.
I didn’t see that in the rules I read… but, I get it and understand why.

I like the rules too - they say don’t do anything in moderation. Sweet! Imbibe! ?

Well, my Saturday is shot. Time for a pipe and a brew. I have one IPA left, think I’m gonna have to have yet another bowl of SantaDrive. Smoking it makes my pipe automatically more expensive and more valuable.

I don't think we blame you. It was an interesting discussion that you hoped would be able to keep being fun without the crap that closed it down. Now worries here as this is a fun discussion in general.

By that logic, there are no more old factory Denmark Stanwells being created.

Today, what wears an S and Crown would’ve been tossed in the quality control furnace in times past.

Is it marketing? Is it willingness of people to pay top dollar for status?
Marketing? To some extent. I worked on a lot of commercials over the years and learned that the science of persuasion works with a lot of people.

Status? With pipes I tend to think that it's a small factor, maybe more of one because of social media.

I've met people who make a good living out of using a part of their downtown apartment as a set. People make appointments to be photographed in the setting so that they can portray themselves as successful on social media.

People buy a house in certain areas because it shows that they're successful and puts them in a population where they can make personal contacts that are highly beneficial to their business.

People eat at socially "significant" restaurants to be seen, and shop at stores that are regarded as proof of knowledgeable and sophisticated taste so that they can be seen wearing that clothing.

Does it make a difference? It can. A friend who arranges music for films told me about one of his colleagues who was interviewing with a composer for an important orchestration job. He researched the composer's interests and found out that the composer loved clothing from a particular store in Beverly Hills. So the arranger bought an outfit from that store to wear for his interview. The composer recognizes the clothing, they start chatting about how wonderful the clothing is, the arranger gets the job.

If a sweater can be a status symbol, why can't a pipe?

I just don't think status represents a large percentage of motivation in the pipe smoking community.

Serious question here. If biz owners don’t think marketing has mystical powers to push desire/demand, then why do companies spend so much on marketing? How is FacePlant worth zillions of dollars?
Why do “influencers” get paid? Thanks in advance for reading.
The obvious answer is that marketing and branding successfully generate lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$. That's what it's about.

So apparently you have not read any of the threads in the last 2 weeks by @Cigar Ash Queen. She posted a ton of recently acquired "expensive" pipes. The title says "...to Each His Own" so I was giving a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reply.
Hello, I just saw this thread and my name was mentioned or I was brought into this thread because of my recent posts about expensive pipes in my collection. I am a woman indeed and a proud member of this forum and proud pipe smoker and pipe collector. All I can say if I may, is that I have all sorts of pipes, from a corncob to Bo Nordhs and many others. I love all my pipes and in my personal experience, I choose to smoke any given pipe depending on my moods, place, special occasions, etc. I have fancy pipes and everyday pipes, same for cigars. I share here because I think most members here would appreciate to see these pipes is all... Not because they're expensive but more so because they're very beautiful, or rare or more difficult to find. I hope you're all enjoying your day, I wish you all a very happy smokey weekend! I'll be posting again shortly some new pipes in my own thread ???

My apologies. It was my attempt at being a bit tongue-in-cheek about the title only.

On a different tangent, I find it refreshing that you have the taste for the expensive but won't dismiss the cheaper option. Most of us love to see the pipe porn and the "pedestrian" love for pipes just as much. Keep it up please as it's the only way I'll get to see some of these pipes.

No need to apologize! ?I didn't take any offense at all ? the thing we all have in common is that we smoke and enjoy our pipes no matter what type or brand they are! I'm just so happy to be able to share here and learn too.. thank you all! ??

It is interesting to see the comments about Rolex. I have posted on here before a family members trench watch from WW1 with a Swiss movement that after a 100+ years still keeps great time. It tells the time which is what it's meant to do. I was not aware that Rolex watches fetched so much money!

I do care about the environment and have an academic background and professional experience in business and marketing.

The last thing a modern business wants to invest in is something not needed or wanted. They spend lots of money to find out.

Enticement is not marketing. Marketing seeks to understand and know the available market. For example, I would love to have a foldable cell phone with the same utilites are my Iphone 7. It will happen. I am not alone.

Forget needs and wants. The Covid vaccine is needed and wanted. Folks might think they don't need a special pipe, but to many responded to how pipe provide a mental/emtional benefit.

And the purpose of understanding the market base is strategic and focued, not for everyone. My bottom line is, marketing is a good thing and we need to come to appreciate. You can be the best engineer on Earth. but if no one needs or wants you are a failure.

Yeah, the beer idea resonates. Are you trying to make me an alcoholic?

Will my Yakima racks fit and go off road. Can the children ride in the back and carry the camping equipment or can I sleep inside on a camping trip? No use for one otherwise.
Marketing exists because of itself...If a mainstream company that sells mainstream quality items doesn't use crafty marketing it will be washed over by the other mainstream companies that do use it... Think of Super Bowl ads...The vast majority of the Companies that advertise that venue are well exposed already (everyone knows what Doritos are and we don't need to be reminded of their qualities but each year that company spends millions on a novel commercial anyway). My point is that while the mainstream population continues the use of mainstream products the upper tier products are never marketed with well thought out ads ...ie Ferrari, Patek Phillipe etc why???
They really don't have the volume need. And they have a customer base that is more aware of what the high end items can do for them.

Hmmm… I’m also in the camp for a foldable cell phone again.

However, saying marketing does not influence is not correct. The very interaction you had with Subaru where “they listened” influenced you. But, I suppose good customer service isn’t seen as a marketing strategy.

I’ll roll with the advice and drop it. Not trying to argue, honestly, just trying to understand. And - definitely better to do a discussion like this over a beer. ?

An interesting read:

If don’t read - last paragraph…

“In conclusion, Subaru's marketing strategy is a science and art because the brand is constantly listening to its target market. These insights that the brand has learned were used to modify and solidify its campaigns.”

There is quite a difference in a 30k auto and a 120k vehicle... you certainly don't need a Porsche to pick up the groceries and the kids

I see ads for those upper tier products in the New York TImes all the time.

If you know people like salty snacks, you make salty snacks. Marketing just lets you know who makes them. It is like "try our salty snacks".

Markeing is not, "we make salty snack and we want to entice and force you to eat them against you will.

There was a time when factories made things no one was asking for. There are times products can help and the consumer needs to be informed.

I just recoil from the misrepresentation of marketing as based on greed and profits.
