I've never had a completely satisfactory smoke from folded flake.

Like most things that rely on one or more of our senses, it's all subjective.
For me, rubbing flake out well gives me a more flavorful smoke that burns evenly.
I might very well agree. Flavor and ease of smoking is definetly better with a rubbed out flake. It is a shorter smoke though, but that is worth it.

Many moons ago, @Chasing Embers described cube cutting flakes and gravity filling. That has worked well for me ever since. Especially with Virginias.
There are still a few flakes I will rub out. GH Rum Flake seems to work best for me rubbed.
But like @bluegrassbrian and @OzPiper already mentioned, I've not (yet) found my bliss with folding/stuffing.

It's an art with folding. Got to think ricks of wood instead of stuffing.
