In Praise of PS Luxury Navy Flake

Today I finished a pound and a half Planter’s Peanut canister of PS Luxury Navy Flake and recharged the canister with another 1 1/2 pound box. This comes 12 flakes to the ounce, and there’s 288 flakes to the box.

One flake fills a medium pipe, and bigger ones take up to four.

All PS LNF is made of is mostly very old Virgina tobaccos plus a dollop of Perique and glued together with a sugary secret sauce.

It’s a classic Va Per at $3.35 an ounce in bulk.

It tastes like an excellent Va Per. There may be slightly better Va Per tobaccos at thee times the price, or the fact you paid $10 an ounce might convince you they are better.

If you want to build your cellar during a slight lull in the War Against Demon Tobacco PS LNF will never be cheaper than today.

It gets better the longer it sits in the box.

It is a must have, in any well rounded cellar of tobaccos.

I've had it fresh a number of times, and thought it was OK.

Then @Butter Side Down recently sent me some 2009 LNF, and oh boy, this 14 YO stuff was *really* good.

Definitely a tobacco that comes into its own with age!

Oh yes, I could not agree more - this tobacco has been a staple in my rotation for years. If you like this type of tobacco, there's no reason not to buy the big box. I think this will be my second pipe of the day - currently smoking a batch from 2020. Cheers!

I loved this blend fresh when I bought a 2 oz sample a few years ago. I liked it so much, I bought 8 oz after my first couple bowls. Then I got super into Burley and it kinda got pushed to the back of the queue. Didn't smoke it for 4 years and I popped the jar open and had my mind blown. Bought another pound that I'm not gonna get to for a while. Can't wait.

PS Navy flag is definitely a decent tobacco, and I think you're right, it would definitely improve with age! The PS #403 Bullseye is one I can smoke without aging it. I think it will age very well also.

Fantastic bulk blend. I've got a couple pounds that recently reached 4 years. I've found I really enjoy stoving this blend too. I'll use the fresh stuff and stove it to smoke on so I can leave the older stuff sealed

Absolutely. I have the three PS always excluded from sales, 400, 402, 403. 400 is fantastic. I think I'll grab a bowl right now. I have to catch up if I'm going to finish up a pound and a half in one day!!!

It ages VERY well, as does LBF. A few years and it transforms into something else altogether.

It's not bad. Not exactly mind blowing. But okay smoke most of the time. Still have some left that's about 2 yrs old. i should smoke some. Mind blowing Va/Per for me was DNR. After couple of months in a job, it's just amazing to my taste.
