Zippo pipe lighters

I have a question for those who use a zippo pipe insert. I tried to use it tonight and it worked well. I do like it actually. But one thing that is different from other flame sources I've used is that it doesn't seem to char the top. The flame seems to get drawn down into the bowl far more than my butane lighter. Does this happen to others too? Am I holding the flame to close to the bowl? As with most things with the pipe, the answer is probably 'who knows'.

I am not sure that this is a problem exactly but, as far as I understand, you should get a top layer to help the smoke.

How short would you trim wick? Like so the top of it sits in the middle of the circle of the pipe lighter insert cut out? Higher/Lower?

Or hold it further away to start or don’t draw as hard? Just a thought without quite understanding the issue. No experience with butane here. My wick is right below the bottom of the top frame and would likely work as well a bit shorter (maybe better).

You can adjust the depth to which the flame is drawn by how hard you draw o the pipe. This shouldn't be an issue.

Zippo's instructions are to trim the wick so that it's level with the top of the chimney.

I own two Zippos, one with the pipe insert, one without. I don’t use them for my pipes any longer.

When I did, I preferred the standard insert to the pipe insert. Less soot and better control of the flame.

I soon tired of the fuel taste, the flint changes and the frequent refills.

Bics seem to last forever.

Yeah, I would trim that one down to be level with the center of the striker wheel rivet.

Let them burn for a second before lighting the pipe as you would a match to burn off any offensive taste. Personally I prefer a Beattie jet but it uses the same fuel.

Never noticed. I light it, let it burn a second or two and away we go! Don't even know if that matters, but I've honestly never noticed any taste or difference in taste with the Zippo vs. matches.

You will probably get a fuel scent right after a full saturation refill. Other than that instance, I've never noticed anything objectionable when lighting with a Zippo. Definitely my preferred instrument when lighting a pipe outdoors. The standard insert works for me--plus I'd hate to give up the cool sounding click it makes when closed. Wish they still made the Ronsonol fluid they made back in the '60s and prior. I don't know what they added to it, but it smelled almost like perfume. It was banned or something--for the friggin' CHILDREN, I suspect, the little hydrocarbon sniffing bastards. At least what we have now is better than aviation petrol, which is what I've been told WW2 fighter pilots used.

I cut my wick down, and turn the lighter upside down after lighting it is, with a standard inset. When you draw the flame down it returns to normal size.

Not necessary to cut the wick, just play with it and you will find that flame will be so different depending of wick bends/curve

First of all you should understand that liquid is not burning, so wick not burning itself,but fumes is. And it will burn in that direction how the wick is twisted, just across it.
Newer taste of oil or gasoline, ore anything else. You just need to use Zippo original fluid.
And ones again... PLAY WITH THE WICK!!!
Not with John Wick... it's can be deadly?
