I think the only pipes I bought in 2022 were a couple of clays and this Altinok Meer which hasn't come in yet. I have more than enough Briars that I'm not buying anything unless it really checks off every box. Hoping Jack Howell starts carving again, I'll certainly be getting one or two from him when he does.

Vegas Baby!!!
This is the easiest question I’ve ever been asked.

Unfortunately it’s Sophie’s Choice.

This has been the single greatest year of collecting. I’ve been unbelievably fortunate.

But here are my top two.

1923 Peterson Magnum and an 1892 Peterson Patent

Now if the question is my two greatest saves, huge shoutout to Ryan Alden. Those are 1911 Peterson Patent Calabash and a 1914 Peterson. Both required extensive skill and technical knowledge to save.

After half a century of pipe smoking, I find that my PAD is finally in remission. I might find a pipe that is attractive, but then look at my pipe racks and realize that I already have one that is similar, but better. This tends to kill the deal. Nevertheless, one will occasionally slip through my defenses. The only pipe that I remember buying in 2022 was this Ser Jacopo billiard. I need another straight billiard like I need a hole in my skull, but this one was so perfect for my purposes--shaping, size, provenance, and grain--that I had to have it. No buyer's remorse with this one.

Still waiting for this to arrive. I bought it this year though. I think this one will do it. 2989E3DE-2A7C-4F08-8BAE-03E99E7440C7.jpeg
Until it arrives, this 1987 Peterson 05 is in the lead. I find it has an unsually curved stem that is unlike my other 05s. I think it just looks strikingly beautiful in proportion.

I've made quite a few purchases this year but this one stands out to me. Not the prettiest but it was so different, I just had to have it. It is a KB&B. The briar bowl screws into a gutta percha mold. To show the sheer size of this pipe I took a picture of it next to a Peterson 68.20221226_092303.jpg20221226_092424.jpg

I got this Venini for 5 euro at a flea market, It was filled with aromatic crud, draft hole blocked, filter used so many times I'm not sure the person selling it knew it needed to be changed.

I don't like the aesthetic for my face, its uncomfortable to clench for long periods of time. That said it is a wonder smoker, blends seem to come alive in it, ones which burn to a normal amount of dottle in my other pipes turn to white ash, it seems to stay lit with minimal tamping only requiring re-lights if I let the smoking cadence slip otherwise once lit it stays that way. Not the most attractive pipe I've gotten this year but damn me it will stay in the collection.
