I’m not talking about your prized 1917 Dunhill Coronation or Castello KKKKKKK Chicco Di Patate. I’m talking about your reliable, faithful, never lets you down, go to pipes. The ones you grab when you’re running out the door, the ones you don’t even have to think about. The pipes that give you a great smoke every time, the pipes you just can’t go wrong with. Your Favorite Pipes…
I have two pipes that I love dearly, they smoke unlike any other pipes. They fit me, they’re comfortable, light, and never let me down. They are nearly identical in size and weight.
The first is my GiGi Liberty 702, Natural Virgin, rusticated, saddle/taper, Canadian. I bought this brand new at Tewksbury & Co in Denver, sadly they have since closed. The rustication is a combination of tool and wire carving. It was originally a natural virgin finish but has since taken on quite a bit of color. The combo saddle/taper is very comfortable and the pipe is very light. It smokes like a champion. After falling in love with this pipe I tried in vain to find others like it but never seen one. I actually find most other GiGi pipes fairly unappealing.
The other is my Paul’s Cayuga, Oil Cured, 4square, with a tapered acrylic bit. I bought this pipe new at Paul’s Pipe Shop in Flint Michigan. 4 Square is one of my favorite shapes and I love craggy blasts. I knew I had to have this pipe the moment I saw it. It originally had a vulcanite saddle bit on it. Fortunately I knocked it off my patio table one day and snapped of the tenon. I was not making stems at that time and sent the pipe off to Mike Myers at Walker Pipe Repair for a new one. I told Mike I’d like an acrylic taper bit for it and he knocked it out of the park. This pipe has always smoked dry as a bone since day one.
If I’m leaving the house with a pipe it’s most likely one or both of these two.
