What pipe smoking or tobacco related superstitions, folk lore or seemingly irrational practices amuse you (or control your life)? :crazy:

Here's one to start off: store your pipe in the vertical position with the bowl down. If you use pipe cleaners after every smoke, is that really necessary?

One irrational practice I have: if a smoke goes out too often, I will cut myself off of using a tamp for the next smoke or 2. Hello, my name is Ryan, and I am a serial over-tamper.

(sigh) I don't get that at all, lonestar. I selected "Family safe" and not "Adult" when I uploaded this. CLicking on the thumbnail first gets a wind farm ad which you close and get the proper pic I uploaded (with no adult ads). I guess I'd better look into another host.

Here are some common pipe lore statements I see/hear all the time.
I must worry about getting a good cake in my new pipe before I can enjoy the smoke experience.

I will graduate to a higher level of smoking if I move beyond aromatics.

Conversely, I am a higher level of pipe smoker because I never smoke aromatics anymore.

If I smoke my pipe with back to back bowls, something horrible will happen to me or my pipe.

Cellering my tobacco for years is the only way to properly experience a blend.

Meers are too much hassle to bother smoking.

The only worthwhile pipe makers are the ones I collect.

mlaug seems to cocky to be likeable, but he is a rather handsome chap.

Not directly pipe related, but, "Red sky at night, sailors delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning" is something I say to myself nearly every day when I inspect the weather, regardless of the sky's actual hue. Must be the OCD.
Pipe related, I have a friend who asked if smoking a pipe wasn't a bit pretentious of me. I told him I wasn't pretending. He continues to delight in telling me about every person he can find who's ever died or gotten the Cancer from smoking a pipe. I tell him that I hope I get ear cancer first, so that I won't have to listen to his shit anymore. :mrgreen:

My most irritating bit of pipe lore is : All beginners should start with aromatics.

Agreed with unclearthur... aromatics can often turn people away from pipe smoking if they already smoke, chew, or snuff other forms of baccy. Aromatics are often too heavily cased here in the states to really experience any nuances of a decent tobacco

I also agree with Arthur. I first tried pipes some 15 years ago and got a pouch of Borkum Riff...and quit it after that pouch. Didn't pick up a pipe again until three years ago.

Cheap pipes can't smoke well.

If you smoke a cob, your a hick, or work on a tug/fishing boat (I'll have you know I haven't been out for a commercial opening in two whole years!)

OTC tobacco is crap.
