I got a windfarm ad, the picture of the Fillipina, and a washed up old gal with a pretty nice new boob job. hell, if i hadn't spent so much on pipes lately, I might of took her up on the chat.

"Here's one I'll never buy into: the liquid gurgling in the stem is saliva. No way, José."
Exactly.
most of the time it is condensate from the tobacco. Water is vaporized when the tobacco burns, then as the vapor is drawn up the cooler pipe stem it condenses out to a liquid. Some tobaccos will do this no matter what -- almost any will do it if smoked too fast. (I know this b/c I tend to puff like the boiler on an express locomotive.)

Schmitz, you never lived until you've smoked a big ol bowl of Gawith Hoggarth Brown Irish X in a 9 foot "tobacco" bong !

You might not live long after that either.....

One irrational practice I have: if a smoke goes out too often, I will cut myself off of using a tamp for the next smoke or 2. Hello, my name is Ryan, and I am a serial over-tamper.
I tamp with my fingers. I find that I tamp gentler and less often when I risk burning myself.

Like you lex i too puff like an old steam engine often getting tongue bite/burn. I have since slowed down and getting more flavour from the tobacco. As for old wives tales and querks for smoking i haven't yet came across any. As for the picture your all talking of i'll give it a miss thanks hahahaha

I agree with unclearthur about the aromatics, especially the heavily flavored ones. When I first started, people really encouraged those as "beginner" tobacco. Very bad idea. Many of them burn wet, taste horrible, and cause far too much tongue burn for someone who doesn't know what they're doing. But, to each his own, I just prefer tobacco to taste like tobacco.

It does serve one purpose, it weeds out the faint-hearted. If someone gets through that crap and still wants to keep smoking, they're obviously a born pipe smoker. :P
