My 3rd pipe, a bent Italian basket pipe. The first was a Dr. Grabow, bought in 1981 while I was stationed in Idaho. Tossed in frustration when I PCS’d to England. Second pipe (1989) was an Italian basket bulldog, which ended up scorched and tossed out years later. The 3rd pipe (1990) had the back wall burn through the draft. I repaired it last summer and now it smokes great. I think Derek Smalls was the inspiration for buying this pipe...

Last pipe, 2000 Peterson XL02 Flame Grain, will be here next Tuesday or so.

THAT is gorgeous!
Thanks man. It's been surprisingly difficult to find a smooth straight billiard meer with the measurements I want, so when this showed up I jumped on it. I wasn't expecting to buy a pipe with a pearl colored stem but this one looks pretty cool, on this pipe at least. It beats a lot of the pastel colored stems I've been seeing lately on IMPs.

But I think ? that Cream Color is ultra classy on your Meer. It’s a stunner! Enjoy it!

I have no recollection of what I smoked 30 years ago. THIS go-round, my first was an HIS Italia bent apple, made by Guardesana, that my wife bought for me at Christmas, I guess 7 or 8 years ago. My latest is a Sasieni Patent Eight Dot "Barclay " I picked up.at Blue Room Briars a week or two ago.20210128_171222.jpg20210128_171209.jpg

I still sort of have one of the first pipes I bought, a sultan's head meer that I picked up in 1972. It's missing its stem.

The latest pipe is my second Barling Magnum, a huge bent billiard hallmarked to 1910, Bowl height is slightly over 3" and width is slightly under 3". Length is close to 10".
You started with a Meer right away? I remember that even at that time they were not cheap.

Not my very first but one of the first pipes I bought was a Denicotea Regatta sandblast with a meerschaum insert in the bowl. Somehow I lost it. Last year exactly this model was offered on ebay

which I bought for nostalgic reasons ,

Yep. The tobacconist who mentored me back then gave me a deal on the meer and also sold me an inexpensive briar, along with a free selection of his blends.
The store was across the street from the jewelry store where I worked and I had done some freebie repairs for him.
It was a wonderful store, Copley’s, and he and his wife did a brisk business selling their blends around the country via mail order. Mr. Copley was a great teacher, kind and patient with the college kid with all the questions.

I don't have my first pipe: It was a Dr. Grabow, red or green bowl that smoked hotter than the fores of hell. My last pipe was a Jesse Jones baby elephant's foot. Just a gorgeous pipe.

1. My first taste of pipe smoking was during my college days, when I took a family heirloom Dunhill prince from my uncle, and broke it within a couple of months. No pictures of this pipe. That was back in 1997 or 1998. After the Dunhill broke, I did not smoke a pipe until 2017

2. I started my real pipe smoking journey with the Meerschaum below. Incidentally I broke the stem on Saturday, and fixed with super glue, but will get a replacement stem done

3. Latest pipe is the Jess Chonowitsch

First pipe was a cob, but my first briar was this Savinelli Series III with a broken shank. I bought it in 2015, and it served me faithfully until I dropped it late last year.

My most recent is in the mail from SP.eu. I have had a bit of a hard-on for an Ashton since one of the guys at my local shop showed me his beautiful little Old Church Bent Billiard X that had an incredible blast. The blast on this one I bought isn't as nice, but it is craggedy-assed and I like it. Bought it as an unsmoked estate. It's a Pebble Grain XX billiard:
