I give Jimmy Page the best riff writer of all time award hands down. Lord, I keep coming back and reading this thread and remembering... Randy Rhodes and Zak Wylde are up there too. My opinion though is Hendrix is my favorite and here is why... Listen tho this and imagine it on steroids. He plays this song on the Rainbow bridge movie and its huge and I can play every lick of it  This version is very weak but I couldn't find the Rainbow Bridge version with the intro. its powerful if you can find it...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcTrAyLuUlc

I don't know if there can be one answer, but I'm surprised the thread went so long before someone said Petrucci...and no love for Dick Dale yet??? :?:
My best rock guitarist pick is a Dunlop Jazz III, the black one...
EDIT- Brian May? Dude built his guitar with his own hands, and instantly identifiable when he solos...

Les Claypool reinvented the instrument. Flea can hammer out some stuff your ears can't even comprehend though. Crap I'm going off topic but this is one of the nmost amazing pieces of bass work I've ever heard. Listen to him hammer out the Peanuts theme doing both the base and melody at the same time, then a bunch of improv. This is a very tame solo for flea. I wanted to post about 10 different videos but thought this one fit this sight and more of you guys would enjoy it more than a full on bass assault.... This has a little of all his style and feel!!! Enjoy!!!

Hate to play "What If?", but I wonder how Metallica would've turned out if Cliff was still here? Or if they had never kicked out Mustaine?? Or if Hammett never used a wah pedal???
Mind. Blown. 8O

Cliff Burton, God rest his soul, Was the man. What a loss it was when he passed. He didn't get to see the powerhouse that his band became. He also didn't get to see his band sell out... Great video man...

I would say that if Cliff had lived tallica would have probably continued to write decent stuff.

I find it more than coincidental that Master of Puppets.. arguably their last decent album was also the last album in which Cliff was involved.

Cliff had a huge writing influence on the rest of the band, basically teaching them music theory etc and even though he was not seen as a main contributor of material compared to Hetfield etc i am more than sure he still contributed regardless of credit.

I think And Justice For All was the last album worth listening to but he still wrote on that album so I agree Six!!! 'm glad they gave Mustane the boot. Megadeath only put out 2 albums worth listening to.. Wake Up Dead is the jam though!!!

I don't know -- Metallica has been my favorite band since '86 and remain so. They had a couple of bad albums (the Black album and St Anger) but I actually think they've been really consistent, plus I respect the fact that they've always been willing to experiment with new ideas. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Cliff had lived, but I actually imagine that many fans would have been far more disappointed than anything. Cliff hated thrash music and thrash bands (his favorite band in the mid-80s was REM, for crying out loud) so I think he might have ultimately "softened" their sound far more than Lars and James ended up doing. In any case, if you didn't pick up "Death Magnetic" I highly recommend it. It's the album they should have released in 1991 instead of the Black album, and has far more in common with their '80s material than the stuff from the '90s (most of which I liked a lot).

All good guitarists mentioned here. I totaly agree with Classics like Uncle Ted, And Jimmy. If you havent heard of Antoine Dufour check him out on U Tube This guy might be more Alternative rock / easy listening but the things he can do with an acustic guitar is pretty amazing. Nice to sit on the porch smoke a pipe and have a drink and listen to.

I don't want to derail the thread too further into a Metallica discussion, but as much as Death Magnetic is a better record than St. Anger (IMO) they REALLY screwed up the production. It's a fizzy, over-compressed mess, and I didn't think it could get any worse than Lars' "garbage can" snare sound on St. Anger...totally unacceptable.
I was making fun of Kirk Hammett's wah-usage earlier, but I think he needs to be on any best rock guitarist list. For real...

Agreed Ghost. Kirks leads shred completely. I haven't listened to a Metallica album since they broke my heart on the Black album. I'm all about the grunge movement, but Metallica slowed it down to try to fit in I think. I like System Of A Downs Guitarist Daron Malakian. Just an honorable mention though....

I'm gonna jump in on this (against all better judgment)
What defines "best" ?
Speed ? Technical ? The ability to evoke emotions ?
On the guitar players, Jimi and Jimmy were so far ahead of what they did with an electric guitar, they definitely deserve that title. Or let's not forget Frampton (first talk box I believe). With regards to speed, Eddie is probably one of the fastest. But with regards to emotion: Knopfler (thanks Cajun and Baron) or of course Gilmour top the charts IMHO.
And the same really applies to drummers. Copeland and Collins are technically some of the best. But i've never felt the emotion that Shrieve was able to convey during his Woodstock solo. He was only 20 for crying out loud !
Bass players, I'm gonna throw Sting, Tina Weymouth, Simon Gallup and probably Mark King out there in the mix. But I'm on less familiar terrain with this one ;-)
Just my two pennies... Off to have a bowl now :puffpipe:

Gilmour is definitely the master at getting the most from the least amount of notes. He really proves the "tone comes from the fingers" thing.
On the other hand, for bass, I have to agree with Adam12 and say Phil Lesh. He's the anti-Gilmour, unleashing a barrage of notes and rarely repeating the same patterns twice. It should be chaos, but it works. He really made the bass a lead instrument. I saw Phil Lesh and Friends at SPAC in 2001, just a wonderful show and my favourite of all the post-Dead groups. Killer band! They did a 30+ minute Viola Lee Blues...The Phil Zone was rocking. Happy times.
