sorry to hear that about Jeff Healy.....
OK up until now we all assumed that the OP meant "lead guitarist"....how about some bass players????
The Godfather of Metal......LEMMY. He's been making toenails curl since the release of "Ace of Spades" in 1980....

All great picks so far, but I would have to pick John Petrucci

Bassists? I give you John Myung of Dream Theater. This is "Dance of Eternity" from Scenes from a Memory Live. His solo beings at :41 of the video.

If this was a bass thread, Is say Lemmy, but since this is a guitar thread, I'm going to give a +1 for Mark Knopfler. He has a unique playing style and if you ever try to play one of his songs, you'll get a new respect for him.

Indeed. His fingerpicking style is more like a banjo player: he plucks *down* instead of *up*. I've tried it. I failed. lol

He's not the most technical. But the feeling in every note is undeniable.

This thread is great, but, as has been said before, it is almost impossible to come to any type of agreement. SRV will always be a favorite. I've had the joy of seeing Satriani in concert several times and he's just amazing. It's hard to argue against Hendrix. Never been a fan of Clapton's vocals, but his guitar work is great. Jimmy Page. I mean, come on JIMMY PAGE. Eddie, well he made finger tapping a necessity in any guitarist's arsenal. Jeff Beck? As Page noted, when Beck is on, he might be the best. There are too many more to name. This is like trying to collect water with a sieve!
I have enough trouble banging out chords and basic blues box scale patterns!!!

I agree the drummer list is shorter. Most people argue Neil Pert or John Bonham.
I'll throw in Stewart Copeland. .

I read that we're on to drummers. Great picks from all, and all of them are people I highly respect. Let me throw in the guy that may have inspired most of them: Zappa's old drummer, Vinnie Colaiuta.
I am loving this discussion. There really is no all time best. But we're celebrating them all.
I'll toss in another one, this time an acoustic legend, Leo Kottke. This man does stuff with a 12-string that bewilders me. This isn't one of his most technical songs, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most beautiful guitar songs I've ever heard.

Best rock guitarist? If you'd asked me 15 years ago, I would have said Jimi.
Now, I can't decide between:

Jimmy Page. He blazed a lot of trails, was eclectic beyond belief and invented many of the studio production techniques that allow our music to sound so damn good compared to earlier material. Plus, while his solo of "Stairway" isn't the most technical of solos, I think it's the best solo ever recorded (it's not all about fancy fretwork -- it's also about capturing the essence of the song into a distilled instrumental summary, and "Stairway" does that better than any I've heard, with the possible exception of "Master of Puppets").
