Certain blends will corrode the interiors of tins, like Haddo’s. Even when the tin is lined, the seam isn’t and that’s where the damage originates.
Tins weren’t intended to last forever, so it’s a bit of a toss of the coin.
All of my Haddo’s was transferred to Mylar years ago.
There’s no solid reason to keep tobaccos in tins.
But, it’s the owner’s choice.

I was contemplating opening a few tins last night and just jarring them due to fears of this and I know what I’m doing this evening now.
Sucks man sorry to see

Fun fact ---

The Bufflehead guy tinned hundred-pound bags of McClelland mixtures by hand in his garage.

He was forced to quit when the ATF informed him that tinning was a criminal no-no for companies below a certain registration "level". Bags, OK; tins, nope.

Most of what he offered was pre-blended McC given a new name (they were all duck oriented), but he did do some "mix level" blending of his own.

I smoked nutmeg when I was in middle school. I was told it got you buzzed......that wasn't true.
Rust can't be THAT much worse....right?
I wonder if this has anything to do with where it was stored. Ive opened many 20-30+ year old tins, never any rust or mold.....or mould for you weirdos.
I keep my tobacco in my climate controlled gun vault.

It’s been kept in a climate controlled space. These things just happen.

Remove it from the tin and see if you can detect a rusty smell.

I’ve occasionally had tins that had similar rust. Some of the tobacco exhibited a smell where it was in contact with the rust but the rest of the tin was fine. Other tins had no apparent smell at all. If the blend smells ok go ahead and try it. If you detect an off flavor then you can decide to pitch it.

Mold is an entirely different situation.
