I bought this pretty little chinrester with propeller emblem in an antique store in Ohio for $20. Got home and noticed a crack in the stem. Should i try to repair it, put on a ring, leave it alone or make it a display piece? The stem is still really tight so i don’t want to glue and clamp it. I'd try to take it back. If you band it you'll cover a lot of the nomenclature, not to mention the cost. When ever you buy an estate, that is one of the first things to look for. But now, I suppose you know that😉

$20 is okay. Even with the crack. It’s usable and in otherwise good shape. Crack looks a little open. Tenon is maybe a little tight. Probably what caused the crack. I’d use it and keep an eye on it. If it doesn’t get worse, ignore it.

Sounds like good advice to me. Kind of what I wanted to hear!

Lube the tenon up with beeswax to avoid stressing the shank when removing/inserting the stem.
