mrhemi71, can't speak for the Kaywoodies or Yello-bowls, but I've got a cheap Medico Conq. bent billiard which smokes great - a touch of gurgle with some of the goopier aromatics, but otherwise, I'm happy with 'er.

A MM Corn Cob Diplomat is a good way to go, it has a real wood bottom to prevent burn out and the bowl dosen't get very hot. You can get get it at Aristocob for around $9.

Got a free Yello-bole yesterday in the mail from my brother. He doesn't gave out anything for free... ever! So i'm sure it will be garbage, but when i get home from work I'll try a bowl in 'er and see how hot she gets.

Since this thread first appeared, all those months ago, I've not only broken the Medico Conq. that I refered to previously, but I've also purchased a KBB Yellow-bowl Meer lined - she smokes wonderfully for the $0.25 I paid for her - although the stem is plastic (and I'm not talking Lucite, but the same cheapo stuff they use in MM Cobs).

Well damn it boys I hate to be the only one that has had good luck with my yellow bole but I have a KBB Yellow-Bole Imperial Bulldog that is stamped just that on one side and imported briar on the other. It is an excellent looking pipe and smokes great. Never owned a piece of shit Brylon but I will definitly stay away from them now! :D

Stay far far.... far away from the brylon.
Schmitzbitz: the meer liner you speak of does it function just like smoking a meer? Very little rest between bowls (wait for it too cool down first).

I inherited my Uncle's Yellobowl, but it is a pretty thick walled Dublin. Smokes ok, but I won't be putting it in the regular rotation. I have found that older Grabows and Mastercrafts are pretty abundant, and they work out well for a beginner. Just be sure to clean them really good. I have heard that the old Kaywoodies are great too, but I have never smoked one. Cant go wrong with a cob though!

I have one yello-bole pipe, it is actually Cynthia's but she doesn't smoke it now that she has the CW that Arthur made.
It is an okay smoker, and I use it for when I smoke in the wind!
This is what it looked like when I first got it...

My brother has a yellobole and he likes it quite well. They do have some briar pipes still and it seems to be a decent enough smoker.

I'm sure it could be pushed like true meer, but since its just an insert in briar (well, fills - it is YB we're talking about after all!), I rest her just like my other pieces; after all, I've got enough pipes that I don't need to smoke 'em back to back to back.

The biggest advantage I find with it is for sampling new blends, it doesn't tend to ghost up with Orientals or Perique to the same degree as briar (although it isn't quite as clean as meer...close, but not quite).

I collect old yello-boles.....here is my website www.otcpipes.com showing off my collection of them along with other pipe stuff. Stay away from brylon. Any yello bole stamped with KBB on it is worth the risk.

Yello-boles are great pipes so long as you get the briar ones. The currently made Imperial, Checker, and Pug are in my opinion the greatest deal in pipedom. 20 bucks gets you a good smoker with a thick vulcanite stem. I don't want to seem like a fan boy, but I love my new pug. I think it's an awesome deal when you consider that other pipes in the price range come with plastic or nylon stems. I think it's a shame so many people knock on Boles because their only experience is with the brylon stuff.

winston has it right. Yello-Boles made out of briar generally a a good bargain and smoke fine. I have a little Checker panel

pot, and it seems like it will do fine. A few people on Forums have gotten some use out of Brylon pipes, but they don't make

most people happy -- smoke hot and not well. One guy uses his for especially gritty work situations, post-fire restoration,

because the pipe is tough-tough-tough, but a cob might be a friendlier choice, though it might not last as long. As a beginner,

stick with briar in Yello-Bole. tobaccopipes.com has a selection from time to time.

I agree - don't go with a new Yello Bole! Brylon was used 1965 onward, stay away from it!
On the shank, if it reads "Honey Cured Briar" it's 1933 to 1936

If it reads "Cured with Real Honey" it's after 1938
Yello Bole is where Kaywoodie sent their undersize and rejected briar. I have a couple of 1930's Yello's and they are nice, serviceable pipes. If you're going the estate route, get a Kaywoodie or Dr Grabow. Visit the forum information on cleaning an estate, AND DON'T FORGET THE SHANK!!!
I'd recommend buying 2-3 MM cobs. They're inexpensive, cool, forgiving pipes. After you've learned the basics, save up for a good briar. Savinelli is a great pipe brand. Petersons take a little more break-in time.

Just purchased a Yello Bole Imperial straight stem briar bowl pipe.Fairly compact and light weight with a smaller bowl size for shorter smokes. Enjoyed first smoke of break in with a half bowl of Frog Morton on The Town. Pipe has a nice draw and didn't get too hot.I think I will like the aluminum scoop since I'm not real fond of filters.Overall I think this will be a good smoker for $24 pipe.

Since this whole question has been revisited, I'd say, for a good quality but very low priced briar pipe ($30-$47 range) I'd recommend Chapius-Comoy pipes available at tobaccopipes.com. They have a limited number of shapes, but likely one a new smoker (or anyone needing a pipe at that price) could enjoy. I bought a zulu shape from them and it has worked out fine. These are full-size pipes made out of briar. There are a number of other briar pipes of quality at the lower price level, but these are a good bargain.
