I think Half & Half, SWR, Velvet, and Prince Albert were the ones most commonly sent to the front. Here’s a Spartan pipe made by D&P from my collection, it was made specifically to be sent over in C Rations. It’s made from rhododendron root and the stem is maple.View attachment 275586View attachment 275587
Note that reads “Genuine Briar” and it was, likely from the burl root of North Carolina mountain laurel.

We think we have problems.

The Japanese took all eight of our Pacific battle fleet battleships out of action and cut off 85% of our rubber supplies on December 7, 1941.

We used wood for pipe stems instead of rubber.

Mountain laurel and manzanita instead of real briar.

And spent 3 billion dollars for an airplane to deliver a 2 billion dollar atomic bomb, actually two atomic bombs.

Harry Truman only had two atomic bombs, because we’d shot one off to prove it worked, but they were enough.:)

If you bomb our Pearl Harbors we’ll put sixteen million men at arms and invent atom bombs using slide rules, and ten thousand planes a month to make you wish you’d not.

William Dudley Pelley, leader of the largest Nazi group in the US, know as the Silver Shirts. He was class A piece of sub human garbage. He aspired to be the American Führer.

In 1942, Pelley was prosecuted by the U.S. government for sedition and seditious conspiracy for conspiring to cause insubordination in the military and obstruct recruitment. He was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison. Pelley was released on parole in February 1950. As a condition of his parole, he was forced to cease his political activities.

Pelly lived on until 1965.

In his final years, Pelley dealt with charges of securities fraud that had been brought against him while he was living in Asheville.

The terms of Pelley's parole stipulated that he remain in central Indiana, and desist from all political activity.

He developed an elaborate religious philosophy called "Soulcraft" based on his belief in UFOs and extraterrestrials, and published Star Guests in 1950. Pelley died at his home in Noblesville, Indiana on June 30, 1965.

Adolf Galland was a fighter pilot, in his book he says one day his bowl was taken off by a stray bullet. Imagine that!
Can’t imagine that, but ww2 aerial combat was out of control. At some point the American army changed the rules. AR 95-1 said all smoking has to be 50 feet or more from an aircraft. Must have been post Vietnam because I think Hueys had ashtrays. I may be remembering that wrong though.

Stalin used to use the tobacco from a crumbled Russian Cigarette and the brand was as correctly reported about Flur de Herzegovina as opposed to the more common brand smoked called BelomorKanal which are still made to this day!
