It's hard to explain to your kids how bad pipe smoking (or any other type of smoking) is for you, if you have a pipe in your face. I will caveat that by saying, I'm not calling anyone on this forum a hypocrite. Kids learn a lot by example and as parents, it is our responsibility to set a good example. That being said, I'm not the perfect parent. My oldest already smokes cigs at 22 years old and I know that my youngest has experimented with snuff and cigs both, but thank God he has more sense than his old man thus far. I regret that all of the preaching against tobacco I have done in the past, has been offset by the example I have set... and so it goes.

I'm afraid the damage is done by the example I have already set. The most I could do (for the oldest) is to steer him towards the pipe in order to distract him from cigarettes. Hopefully the youngest uses my poor judgment as an example of what not to do. I will use Warren's advice in the future and tell them both that they should strive to do better than their old man.

I always thought that is was important to dispel early the kid's firm belief that parents are perfect. I thought it best to do that before they found out on their own.
It's very akin to my parent's philosophy of disabusing me early that the world did not, in fact, revolve around me. I believed that for the longest time.

Really? A very slight thread drift and you feel it necessary to criticize? This after two months, or are you revisiting under a new handle?
What “after two months”? I couldn’t understand that one.
I opine one should simply do a bit of research, make the decision to smoke or not and then, cease trying to make a case about how smart you are to smoke. Just enjoy the pipe or whatever.
I cannot agree more with you Warren.
Tell that to someone who has Peripheral Artery Disease & a candidate for having the arteries in their legs stripped at the least, or at risk of losing a foot or possibly a leg.
I doubt it mate. I would like to know more about that. As far as I know, people confuse nicotine with smoking. Nicotine users die mostly because of the smoke. It is like coffee, more or less, it has some health risks and health benefits. One more time, I am talking about nicotine not smoking itself. In some cases, such as in pregnancy any kind of nicotine intake is not advised because it may harm the fetus.

Guys, I would like to come to a conclusion if you don't mind.
I literally smoked everything that a person may smoke, I started with hookahs, then cigars and cigarillos, then cigarettes, then pipes. I do know realize that whatever you smoke DO NOT smoke it into your lungs. That is my personal opinion. I try to quit smoking cigarettes and I can see how they are damaging my health. At least it is visible. I don't say that pipe or cigar smoking is better and healthy, but at least they harm me less.
Long story short, I don't and will never smoke when I am close or visible to kids (mine or others). I would never ask/encourage/provoke/ them to smoke anything. Even in case of smoking cigarette/cigar/pipe I will discourage them on the first hand (that is actually what I do at the moment). However if they really want to smoke I will just educate them about moderate pipe and cigar smoking. That is my own personal opinion.

I agree with dutch65. Alot of these posts are slightly disturbing . I enjoy the hobby and if any of my children want to learn the hobby at a legal age then I will definitely teach them everything I know. I do not push anything onto my children without them showing interest at first. There is a risk vs reward with everything in life. That is like saying I won'the let my kids learn to ride a skate board because it is more dangerous then walking. This is just my opinion though.

There is definitely a cultural divide on this subject. I'm a hobbyist, that's what this is, and with no prior history my context is mostly neutral (even though the subject was completely taboo growing up, I have no first hand experience).

Other people seem to have scarring experiences or memories involving tobacco, so in that context the negativity is probably healthy.

Might be relevant:
Our study population consisted of 5621 male case patients with lung cancer and 7255 male control subjects. Each subject or his proxy was interviewed with respect to the subject's smoking history and other risk factors for lung cancer. RESULTS: The odds ratio (OR) for smoking cigars and cigarillos only was 9.0 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 5.8-14.1), based on 43 exposed case patients and 77 exposed control subjects, and the OR for smoking a pipe only was 7.9 (95% CI = 5.3-11.8), representing 61 case patients and 129 control subjects. The OR for smoking cigarettes only was 14.9 (95% CI = 12.3-18.1), based on 4204 case patients and 3930 control subjects. A dose-response relationship was present for duration of use and cumulative consumption both for cigars and cigarillos and for pipe tobacco. An effect was also suggested for inhalation of cigar and cigarillo smoke. The dose-response relationships between lung cancer risk and either duration of smoking or average and cumulative consumption were similar for cigar and cigarillo smoking, pipe smoking, and cigarette smoking. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that smoking of European cigars, cigarillos, and pipe tobacco might exert a carcinogenic effect on the lung comparable to that of cigarettes.

Damn, found this late!
If you look at Warren's 2,870+ other posts, I think one would have to be pretty dense to think that he doesn't really enjoy his pipes,
Ditto!

I have no children of my own, but my friend's 9 y/o grandson saw me smoking a pipe and has since expressed an interest in it, saying hes going to smoke a pipe when he turns 18. I told him if I ever caught him I'd whip his a$$. I told him unless he wants to end up coughing up crap, smoking first thing out of bed in the morning and turning to cigarettes at work when there's no time for a pipe like me, he needs to stay away from tobacco. Yes, I enjoy my pipes and cigars immensely, but had I listened to wise old Grampaw I never would have continued.

I read a small handful of post on this thread. I passed it off several times unread. Being a little bored at the moment I clicked on it. If this has been said, I apologize. My sentiment hasn't changed since I first saw the topic...
Don't you know kids don't take advise! Hahaha

Minnesota,
This discussion is f'ed up by the title.
No one would advise children to smoke!
Would you even advise an adult to smoke a pipe?
Would I advise my children to smoke when they are adults?
I would advise them not to.
But,

I sure the hell didn't ask my dad if he would advise me to smoke a pipe.
