Mackeson, those tiny pores/channels look like they've had smoke run through them, don't they? Then again, I can't say that for certain. I'll have to submit a research grant proposal to the FDA for further study. They fund all kinds of stupid shit important things, they might be interested in this.

I think that's a very worthy project very deserving of further study. I volunteer to be a victim subject of that study

Be careful! Very careful! The balsa bits don't seem to be currently regulated by the FDA or EPA. Etc. Too much attention might change that, and the price would go up exponentially.

John, you mean to tell me that there is no Federal oversight of balsawood? That doesn't feel safe to me. What about the children?

The children- good point. I am going to introduce a bill in Congress to ban all model airplane kits. They're mostly balsa, now widely known as associated with pipe smoking, therefore dangerous. Yes, the children!!

If you want to smoke with a filter i would say that each type of filter has its pros and cons.

charcoal: Takes more particular matter out the smoke, but this greatly reduces the taste and the filter may get extra soggy.

Balsa: Takes less particular matter out the smoke and doesn't influence the taste and it absorbs alot of moisture without getting too soggy.

Depending on the which type of filter but normally the charcoal can gurgle.

Nice tread. I argue that balsas are nice to smoke unflavored blends. But if you're an aromatic smoker, you better get an active charcoal filter. Please, don't buy any filter, get a quality one like Stanwell-there are many brands out there. Here in Germany you can buy big quantities for a relatively low price, but they don't worth, I mean the product doesn't worth. The cheap ones do a nice job with Latakia blends; this shit is strong anyway, tasteful anyway, so it's ok. But for full pleasure, I go with Stanwell.

Use all types - charcoal, balsa, 6mm paper ones for cobs

Also tried some from Germany that were essentially a small sponge like cylinder in paper wrap :)
