Woodburning (Pyrography) on a Pipe?

Has anyone done any woodburning on their pipe? If so, when do I do the woodburning? Would I do it after all sanding and staining has been done? Advice please.

I'm doing it all the time. The insides are very well burnt on all my pipes. SCNR, but never had anything to do with it, as you mean it.

What are you going to burn into it. I've seen it used but never to any good. Everything I've seen is gaudy or hoakey, but go ahead you may be the carver that puts it on the map.

Why not start with accent lines, then see if you want to continue.

Nording does some pretty cool looking pipes that appear to be pyrographic rustication.
I have a Stanwell Rustico which is similar to the Nording technique, I love it.
It's really kind of gnarly, and very grippy, I have a shape 19, don't have time to click a pic, but here's a few photos of what the Rustico line looks like...

Mark, if you're seriously considering this, buy some cheapos at your local antique store or Ebay. Better to practice before making a grievous mistake.
