Haven't had Pete's Beard. I think that one is just Latakia and VA, and i prefer a good dose of Oriental leaf in my Latakia blends.

Were you able to smoke the whole bowl of Countryside when you tried it? If not, you may want to try to finish one of Quiet Nights. Not to be a masochist or anything, but I find Latakia stands out with its pungency immediately in a blend, but then it settles in and mingles with the other components in a more subtle way. Especially in a balanced mix like QN.

I could have finished that "Countryside" but I chose not to. Honestly, I felt it ruined every bowl I smoked after it in the pursuit of getting it off my palate. That was a mistake thinking a light sweet aromatic would cleanse it away.

I think I was just caught off guard too. I won't give up but taking a break at least from that one.

I had heard "Pete's Beard" was wonderful and tough to get. I did not buy it locally as it was sooo much $- well for me.
I am digging this new tin of Orlik but I know that's not latakia.

I will open up the Quiet Nights- I just wasnt sure I should if I wind up not liking it. I guess jars will handle that predicament.
I do appreciate the feedback.

who knows. From my experience the wild card with blends that have Latakia falls on everything else it's with. I don't really like a lot of the things that have it, but at the same time most of my favorites have Latakia in them. Latakia flake is very latakia forward yet it's a really well polished latakia smoothed out tremendously by the other leafs. So one way to find out fire up the pipe and see what happens.

I agree wholeheartedly that you should put them away and try them again in few months. I’ve come to love blends that I flat out didn’t care for at first smoke.

That being said, I gave various Latakia blends a solid try, and I can say definitively that I don’t like Latakia. I’m not a big fan of sweet potatoes, either. Smoke what appeals to you and don’t stress about it

Like others have said, you will probably be quite please with your choices. Good selections by the way. No bad ones there! English blends with Latakia usually have no bite and are pretty smooth. Wide variety of tastes with the difference in blends. Hang in there if they seem odd at first!

I'd say, put these blends away well-jarred and try again later. It could be that your tastes are still undeveloped, or that you have a narrow band for blends and only like one or two genres. I like a wide range of English and Balkan blends, though my top favorites tend to be burley blends, and I like Virginias and Va/Pers as well. But some folks will only enjoy one or two genres and no others. So live and learn. Right now, find something you like and start there.

Sorry about the absence all. Holidays, a funeral, health, and a hopefully soon reset.
Thanks for the feedback.
I've been okay with Quiet Nights and some lighter latakia blends. I guess it was that one I tried that was over the top for me especially at that point.
@logs sorry but my balls are bigger than necessary to film a Jap bukkake. Well so I've been told ha.
And well if that is what makes your taste a "well traveled man" or I eat hot dogs and you eat black sea caviar from polluted sturgeon. Well.... Perhaps there is needed self inflection if that's what makes you tick lol.
I realize now I just did not like that blend. Oops- it happens.
I have my disaster of a man cave set up to be left alone (as it was a 300' office in the past)
when I was part of a lame ass exec junk at a rather large IT company. I enjoy smoking down here more until it warms in CO.

Refurb'd a God knows how old Rossi that was definitely handmade though my Salv is my go to still. Had not much time and $ yet to buy up some more/better smokers but I am stocked up from b4 Christmas on tobacs. Aro's to English.

I do hope my balls don't start messing up the new hardwood flooring I am having done for my commercial kitchen overhaul. I really don't have the vertebrae left to crawling to fix the flooring or looking up to those that are well above my slow to develop tastes. Apparently my smoking tastes should adhere to those that say this and that are the ones that are aficionados lol. I am glad that I did not buy that Banksy shred o'matic art- though I suspect it's worth even more as people more educated than I will always be above my simple tastes.

Perhaps we can banter about which left bank Bordeaux was the best investment this previous year?

Thanks for the help folks and sorry I've been too busy to post lately.

So I found out I either detest or need to grow up to smoke English blends perhaps.

There's no need to apologize for not liking Latakia. I loved Penzance and Nightcap when I first started a decade and a half ago, but now I just never reach for it. Maybe once every two months and then I wonder "Ehhhh... I don't even think I wanted this over something without Latakia in it"

Tastes vary and change. If you want something smokey without that creosote note that Latakia tends to have, try some dark fired kentucky. Cigar smokers tend to like it.

So just some thoughts I personally love Latakia especially in the cold winter months, but when summer hits my personal preference turns to Virginia’s and burleys. It’s strange how taste can be different and what you enjoy is what you enjoy. Best advice has been already mentioned jar the stuff and keep it and revisit it at a later date. Maybe one day you will be sitting there craving that Latakia who knows.

It gas grown on me. Actually never needed to. It was simply that the 1st Latakia blend seems to be almost all Latakia. Countryside was so over the top 4 me, was my first english, but loaded and felt perhaps they were all like that.
I've found others I have like quiet nights are fine.

I agree, they are a good fit on cold evenings.
I do also find some aromatics are too light at times. I like the VaPers a lot. Wish they all burned flowers but aromatics also take a bigger toll on my mouth even with drying.

Funny, wasn't and still am a cigar smoker at times. Just not often now I picked up a pipe.

Sounds like you made a mistake and you're not ready for man tobacco. It's okay. Just go back to Captain Black until your ballsack drops down.
Oh, sorry, when my balls dropped finally in your mouth (sorry I skipped the reach around, u weren't worth the time), did they fit the typical flavor profile prefer? Sorry if they were cleaner than what u r accustomed to smoking.

I don't like latakia at all, I wish I did, then there wouldn't be a blend I couldn't try. I've had different tobaccos that contain it from both Samuel Gawith & Germains but I can't stand the stuff, it tastes like moldy mushrooms and makes me feel sick.
Luckily I like everything else it's just latakia I can't get on with.

You didn't even give him a reach around? Gunnery Sergeant Hartman would not be pleased .

Steers, queers, and people pushing their tastes (tea baggers?) on u. Well would have been a better laugh if not 4 my fat thumb spelling- and the fact i just asked 4 a divorce (buzz kill indeed ha).
Turns out I like latakia/English blends. Just not that one (countryside) I've found out.
Well now I can smoke my pipes anyway and anyhow how I'll be a single half dead tobac lover now lol.
We all need our sanity even if it's all in our heads...

Thx. I still get upset over "Natasha". Most doggie lovers go thru that mess.
I am wondering if I should pop open "Quiet Nights" and try it.
Larry's is in a 2 oz bag. If I smoke some Larry- is that a good comparison?
Thx a ton
It's tough when a loved furry companion passes over.
My beautiful Rotti boy still visits me in the astral when I'm asleep. He passed nearly 15 years ago yet I still think of him daily with a smile. He'll be waiting for me when it's my time. Love is an unbreakable bond.

My first taste of Latakia was a generous sample of Becks ol' Bastard from 4noggins.
The description I gave on the bag-note was 'burnt rubber, asphalt & butt', lol.
Thinking, 'do people smoke this stuff?' I had to give it a try. Didn't taste half as bad as it smelt.
Mixing it 50/50 with Windsail Virginia, I enjoyed one small bowl every night. Two bowls was one bowl too many.

Now a couple of years on, I quite enjoy blends with latakia where it's used as a condiment.
Lat-bombs eventually destroy many smokers appreciation for the stuff I think.

Mixing in a little Windsail Virginia [or an un-topped Burley] works a treat.
A nice change of pace is mixing an English blend with an aromatic. My latest concoction is London Squire mixed 50/50 with Mark Twain which makes a very tasty blend.
