Here's a link to an article from the Mayo Clinic which answers your question.

I hope that you find this information to be helpful.

Thanks for the link.

That article says nicotine raises blood sugar. I have done some reading on the matter, and I often see both takes. Some say it drops blood sugar, some say it raises.

Later today I'm going to get more test strips and do some experimenting.

I had high blood sugar for years, not diabetes, high blood sugar, but pretty high blood sugar and other than that being a fat pig I was one reason I went on keto. I dropped my blood sugar way way way way way way down and haven’t had a problem with it since not saying you should go on keto so that you can smoke cigars and Pipes to make up for it but there’s always options out there man. Good luck!

I've been on a very low carb diet basically since I wound up in the ER for having a BS reading of over 500... That was about 2 months ago.

I've lost 20 pounds... You can't exactly enjoy a piece of cake when it could cost you your sight. Haha

Plus my wife won't cook anything good anymore.

I've never been a real overeater. Always just one large meal per day, dinner.

Those readings stay really high regardless.

I'm a young man compared to yall codgers... But they've put me on 10 different medicines within the last 6 months.

Starting to feel like an old car that will soon be replaced. Haha

I have diabeetus. A doctor put me on Glipizide, Metformin, and Jardiance.

I was/am peeing 50 times a night.

How does nicotine affect blood sugar?

Yeah I know... Talk to your doctor.

Not looking for exact medical advice, just looking to have a conversation with smokers.

Sorry to hear it. My two cents, FWIW (which is probably less than two cents) is, in addition to low carbs, minimize as much as possible any type of highly processed foods, including meats, such as package lunch meats. And I seem to recall once upon a time you confessed to drinking a lot of diet coke. Aspartame is said to cause impaired blood sugar and weight gain.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, and eating a lot of processed foods will eventually screw up most people's metabolism to one degree or another. I adhere to the school of thought that most chronic illness is the result of the combination of toxicity and poor nutrition...which is the norm with the American diet...it will trigger whatever your personal genetic disease tendencies are.

For what it's worth, you might consider making your "...one large meal per day..." either breakfast or lunch, and keeping your dinner light. As the old saying goes, "Too many calories late at night will make your pants and belt too tight!" Not only that, but it may also raise your blood sugar level as noted here.

Again, I hope that this proves to be helpful.

A little over a year ago I lost 37 pounds. I reset my insulin resistance and have kept it off within a few pounds variance. I was pre diabetic more than likely. I feel better. I am a codger and it doesn't get easier as you get older. Any sugar or heavy carbs tend to trigger hunger for me so I just avoid it pretty much. I don't like artificial sweeteners either. I have been at it for a while and I don't like to use the term struggle but it's all a conscious decision. I have always been active and lately I've increased my resistance workouts but no matter the volumes of exercise it was all diet for me. diet.

I wish you the best in this journey. If you make changes that seem hard, eventually they become the norm and you think about it less. My 2.

I'd be interested in any information you find out about nicotine and blood sugar as well .
As for the Diabetes ... I went from nothing to severe diabetic virtually overnight. Mine is genetically inherited. Severe as in "we don't know whether to give you meds or send you for dialysis 3 times a week. I chose the meds (same as you) and reduced my numbers in a year (my doctor actually received a bonus$) ; changed my diet to avoid carbs and processed sugar and lost 85 pounds. I've recently lost another 3 but that may be due to heat and dehydration recently. If I lose another 10 I will weigh the lowest since grammar school. Don't eat one meal a day. Eat 5-6 small snacks of protein with some fruit and vegetables. You will feel better. If you are going to 'cheat' skip the crap and go for the gold but only once a week. Avoid white flour and sugar, pasta and breads.
By the way the urinating is due to the Jardiance which stimulates the kidney to remove sugar. Drink plenty of fluids. Let me know if you find anything clearcut about nicotine. I suspect the increase is minimal unless you smoke goopy aromatics laced with spray sugars and inhale. What I've read indicates that smoking stimulates the adrenals and boosts sugar or something. I don't remember.

My wife has elevated blood sugars and is being medicated for diabetes, although she’s not yet been officially diagnosed with diabetes.

Shes now taking Ozempic in addition to Metformin which seems to make her sick. If Brumley was alive today he’d be singing O - O - Ozempic.:)

She also has liver problems and intractable back pain.

She quit her two or three pack a day Virginia Slims Menthol Gold 120 habit last year when she was hospitalized.

Pushing away from the table and exercise are recommended, but not so easy to do.

She has to avoid certain foods.

The thing to do is have parents who didn’t have diabetes.

Mah jeans ahhr Scottish Ozark Mercian.:)

She needs to take Metformin WITH food (even a little bit) otherwise it can cause stomach cramps. In fact they tell you not to take it unless you've eaten something 30 minutes beforehand. Don't be on the Ozempic too long ... it causes muscle loss and bone density loss. I was on it for three months and lost 45 pounds which was great to jump start weight loss but I stopped on my own when I saw the side effects and switched to diet and exercise. Even 15 minutes walking twice a week can have a tremendous effect ... she doesn't need to train for the olympics ! or simple bike riding around the block. Best of luck to her and you.

My parents are both old and healthier than me. FWIW

If nicotine lowers blood sugar then I better keep smoking... A day or two without cigarettes and I might be hanging out with Wilford. Haha

Never did go get those test strips... Maybe I'll get out tomorrow.

My wife just made cornbread... Maybe that counts as a vegatable.

If Brian is right about the diet Cokes that could be the whole cause.

It has to be more than just diet that causes type 2 though... There are plenty of 500 pounders with normal blood sugar.

Like I said before... I never really ate healthy foods. But I've never drank any sugary drinks or really had a sweet tooth.

Back in the day when I was in great shape I ate a lot more bullshit...

I actually think my health went down when I stopped drinking, back then I ate lunch and drank dinner.

Who knows... Health is a fragile thing. Once it's gone you're up shit creek.

There are a variety of ill effects it can have...and like almost everything else it's not going to be the same for everyone. And like almost everything else it depends on how much you're ingesting. If you're drinking a lot of it, I'd definitely cut that shit out...but that's just me.

My diet is far from perfect, but there are certain things I won't go anywhere near...and Aspartame is high on that list...nasty shit IMO, and should have never been "approved"...like many other chemicals.

Whether it has anything to do with your issue, no way of knowing...but if I was you I'd cut it out altogether and see if you notice any difference after a while.

Yeah, I'd say over the years the diet Cokes have become an addiction.

It's funny too, because when I first started drinking them I really didn't like them. I was a teenager trying to cut out sweet tea.

I probably drink 6 a day. And those damn things have gotten expensive too.
