You could have closed that thread after you found the question intrusive or rude. Instead you pour out your whole life story and then make a thread demonizing people making casual conversation? I’d say this whole thing is pretty rude.

He wasn’t referring to a thread he started or could have closed.

He hasn’t demonized anyone.

Seems a very civil discussion.

He hasn't demonized anyone, just lamenting on his own opinion. I don't believe he referenced a specific thread or person(s) either.

Fair enough. I known what thread he’s referring to. I was wrong saying it was demonizing. Just seems simpler to not post your life story if you don’t like the question being asked.

He was referring to a recently started thread asking when and why folks started smoking pipes. Actually pretty harmless and seems to come up a fair amount but one’s reaction is still one’s reaction and I think he explained it well, as you noted.

Perspective! A grandfather clock that only chimes on the hour just chimes 56,940 times in a single non Leap Year - who doesn’t like a grandfather clock? :)
Every hour my great grandfather clock tells my grandfather clock how easy his godforsaken generation has it. How in his day he had to hike uphill both ways in the snow to chime on time and clocks were clocks, not the plastic pansies they are today.

Why? Well, mostly for comparison and ranking. Example: How many bowls do you smoke? 7. Ok well I only smoke 5 and I feel like it's a lot. But since it's not your 7 then I am not that bad. Honestly, # of bowls is irrelevant; the pertinent question is about volume of tobacco. I've been smoking for a long time...is that normal? Let me ask the other smokers what they consider normal and/or a long time. In the end, most of us want to know where we live on the bell curve of any given question. We get that answer by evaluating questions like those that you find intrusive whether we submit our responses or not.

A mod could close this any time.

I appreciate the considered responses, as well, as the "shoot from the hip" responses. And, in all fairness to every respondent, I got what I was looking for when I posted the query. I could "like" most every reply. Curiosity does in fact seem to trump what I learned as "proper manners". Fully realizing accepted behaviors change over time and, I now feel properly "left behind" by the new, ever changing standards. I will hold to mine but, at the same time, try to refrain from holding others to those standards. It's a battle older generations never win anyway.

Thanks again for many "considered" responses. And, thanks. especially to those who noted the "tongue in cheek" line.

Never mind he explicitly stated as much and that he wasn't intending judgement or demonization.

Talk about rude behavior, that's one I find rude, when people make presumptions or respond without actually reading what they're responding to.
